Being Strong for Others can be EXHAUSTING.
Loving and supporting others in a way that you never were can be EXHAUSTING.
At times, it may leave you wondering...

Why do I always have to be the strong one?
OR
Why doesn't anyone show up for me the way I show up for others?

It is important to find a balance between taking care of yourself and taking care of others outside of yourself. Truth is, you can't help yourself and/or anyone else if you can't breathe.

When we are stressed we may partake in behaviors that we believe help us to feel "better".

For instance, shopping, drinking, exercising, etc. These behaviors by themselves are not harmful, but when any behavior is done in excess and used to avoid feeling emotions we deem uncomfortable then it can be detrimental to our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Truth be told, most behaviors, when used this way, don't help us feel better...we only feel "different".

So how do you start to feel better?

To feel better start by doing the hard stuff often which means sitting in and working through emotions even if it is hard, uncomfortable, and you don't understand them, AND ask for support from someone you trust or a professional.

You don't have to navigate the hard stuff alone. No one should!

At times when we are hurt we rely on our intellect to make sense of the pain we are experiencing. However, there is a problem with that...our heads are not broken, our heart is.

You can try and talk your way out of feeling hard or uncomfortable emotions, but failing to acknowledge and work through these emotions only buries them in your heart.

There is only so much hiding your mind can do before the emotions you are trying to avoid show up in other ways in your life. If you have found yourself feeling unfulfilled or not satisfied with your life lately, ask yourself "What have I buried in my heart"?

Grief looks different for every client we serve. Sometimes grief looks like being a child of two parents not native to this country. Moving is a kind of grief that isn't always recognized. We silver line moving as a "new start" or "new beginning", but with all new things, there is a period of change to what used to be our "norm" no matter if the change is for the better!

If you have ever traveled by airplane, we bet you didn't realize that you have heard some of the best counseling advice on how to help others.

"In the event of an emergency...If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your [oxygen] mask first, and then help the other person".

In short, you can't help anyone else if you can't breathe. Helping and serving others is an amazing thing to do, but when it comes at the detriment of your own physical and/or mental health, then it's time to re-evaluate how you are showing up for others.

At all times, make sure that you are prioritizing caring for yourself both physically and mentally because YOUR WELLBEING IS IMPORTANT!

While Valentine's Day can be a reminder of joy, love, and connection for most, for others this day can stir up emotions associated with loss all over again.

Whether it is the first Valentine's Day after losing your spouse or partner, a significant relationship has ended or you are grieving a love you didn't get to fully experience, you don't have to be strong today. You don't have to replace your loss. You don't have to stay busy. You don't have to isolate. You don't have to fix yourself, you're not broken.

Today may be hard and that's okay. Grief can be messy and intense, allow yourself to feel however you feel today. ❤

We hear so often "he made me so sad" or "she made me so angry", however, people do not have the power to "make you" feel anything.

You can feel an emotion as a result of something that happens to you, but how you choose to react as a result of what you are feeling is all within your control.
