We are seeing a surge of strep infections in our community. With the recent cases of invasive strep featured on the news, we wanted to share some information about strep throat and offer guidance about when to bring your child in to see us!

Strep throat is an infection caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Strep (GAS). GAS is a contagious bacteria that spreads easily. GAS is most common in school-aged children, but can affect younger children and infants as well. Common symptoms of strep in older children include a sore throat, fever, headache, abdominal pain and vomiting. Younger children, who are less than three years old, more commonly have low grade fevers and may have congestion and a runny nose. While strep infections are less common in babies less than one year old, they can still become infected and may have low grade fevers, be fussy or not eat as well as they typically do.

Strep throat is diagnosed with a swab in the doctor's office and treated with antibiotics. While the vast majority of strep infections clear completely with an antibiotic, children may on rare occasions have complications from the infection including abscesses in the tonsils, blood and skin infections and issues with kidneys or joints.

If your child has any of the above symptoms, especially if they have been exposed to someone with strep throat, we would recommend your child be seen by their doctor.
