LGBTQ+ youth in foster care are at higher risk of additional harms, including risk of discrimination, isolation, homelessness, and abuse. Professionals, volunteers, and the community who work with children and youth should work to understand the lives, stories, and unique challenges our LGBTQ+ youth face and work towards creating safe, stable, and supportive environments for them to thrive.
At CASA, we value the diversity and unique identities of our LGBTQ+ community. As June comes to an end, we remain committed to allyship in creating a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment for everyone.
A heartfelt thank you to Kim Rashid from DCFS for speaking at our June CASA Time training last night! Kim spoke to our CASAs about her career at DCFS and her current role as foster parent recruiter, the relationship between CASA workers and foster parents, and how our volunteers can more effectively work as a part of the child and family team. Kim’s insights and expertise were invaluable and we are grateful for her dedication to her work and support of the CASA program.
