Paws Giving Independence NFP
Saving a life to change a life. Our purpose is to train service/facility dogs and place them free of charge. Visit our website for more info!
Paws Giving Independence is run completely on public donations. We are unique because our service dogs are placed free of charge and we currently have no paid staff. That is why we need your help to keep our program running. Many of our dogs are all rescued from shelters but we need your support to pay for the vet bills and everyday care.
I need a family pet home! ❤️🐶
Meet Colby, our sweet 8-month-old retriever mix, looking for his forever home! Due to dental hypoplasia, Colby is being career-changed from a working dog to a pet, but his vet assures us that his condition won’t be an issue in a loving pet home. Though he’s lost a few teeth and can’t retrieve well, he has plenty of love to give.
Colby is a bit shy and needs some time to warm up to new people, so we’re searching for a patient, understanding family who can give him the space to feel comfortable. For this reason we think he would do better without small kids. He’s still a playful pup at heart and is ready to bring joy to his new home. He will need continued training to be his best! He is house trained, crate trained and knows basic obedience skills.
Could Colby be the perfect match for you? Reach out to learn more!
First step is a family pet application: https://givingindependence.org/family-pet-application/
Dog Diary from Oliver and Jamie📚🐾
I use a wheelchair full time and am completely paralyzed from the chest down. I was doing my household chores and was struggling to reach something. Oliver was laying by me and looked up, seeing me reaching for something that was out of my reach. He quickly got up and ran into the living room. He came back carrying one of my grabber tools. I hadn't said a word to him - he just knew Mom was struggling and knew exactly how to fix it.
It might not seem like much to the average Joe, but this moment meant the world to me. The goal from the beginning was to become a team with Oliver. A service dog is so much more than a tool. He is an extension of myself and my very best friend. He has learned my habits and can premeditate my needs before I even know sometimes.
This moment is the result of months of training together and building this unbreakable bond ❤

Siblings Sunday! 🐶🐾💜
Many of our service/facility dogs and service dogs in training have siblings at home! During their time in training, sometimes the trainer is unable to take their foster with them for an extended period of time (going out of town, overnight, etc). This means that they get to spend extra time with their siblings or have a sleepover with their friends! Our volunteers and recipients are amazing and are always willing to lend a helping hand when needed and we are forever grateful for that!

Thank you Wheels O' Time Museum! 🚗
We are so thankful for Wheels O’ Time hosting our annual training outing. They graciously donated tickets to our recipients, trainers, and family members! The museum allows our dogs to experience a large variety of sights, sounds, and movements. We introduced our dogs to train horns, car sounds, animatronics, mannequins, moving objects, farm equipment, and so much more! We are so thankful for Wheels O’ Time and their amazing staff! 🦮🐾

Post from Sampson the Service Dog in Science: Traveling, especially flying, can be one of the most stressful situations for a service dog. So many factors change, there are so many unknown variables. A service dog that has in-depth training can calmly maneuver new situations even if they’ve never experienced them.
Some things require additional training to acclimate them to situations, but a handler must rely on their service dog to be flexible and adaptable.
The overall temperament determined during training can continue to move them forward through the training process. Each dog has their own personality and some are just not made for service work. Others move forward because of their ability to eagerly learn, adapt, and stay sound in mind, balanced, and happy. Then the level of training and duration is key!
Training matters!
