Have you been wanting to plant some native trees in your yard? Now's the time!

Check out this exciting new program!

ReLeaf Petaluma, Cool Petaluma, and the City of Petaluma have teamed up to offer FREE native trees to Petaluma residents. [Español abajo]

The City of Petaluma received $1 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program for a tree-planting initiative called the Petaluma Canopy Project which is funding this fantastic new Residential Tree Program.

Getting your trees is easy. Sign up for an onsite tree consultation. A ReLeaf tree expert will help you choose the best tree species for your location. Trained ReLeaf volunteers will plant the tree(s) and offer care consultations for up to 3 years. You provide the water. That's it!

Why natives? Native trees cool our homes and neighborhoods, while providing habitat for local bees, butterflies and birds.

If you are interested in free trees for your yard or in the street strip, learn more and sign up here: https://www.coolpetaluma.org/canopy-project

USDA, City of Petaluma, ReLeaf Petaluma, and Cool Petaluma are equal opportunity providers and employers.

In May of this year at Miwok Valley chater school, 46 volunteers powered through the day to help plant over 900 native plants which were carefully selected to support local pollinators during each season of the year. By converting over 12,000 square feet of lawn into a pollinator hedgerow, the school will save 290,800 gallons of water annually!💧
On top of that, three 5,000 gallon rain tanks were installed to irrigate the trees planted on site by . In addition to the water savings and increase in biodiversity, this will also be a place where students can connect with nature!

Check out this example of a landscape design we created for a Petaluma resident who applied for the Resilience Partnership

This site had major flooding issues in the backyard, as well as a dated, dry landscape in the front yard. Our team put together a plan to address the issues while also making the site more climate resilient. Here's a few things that were included in the project:

✅Information about rebates from the City of Petaluma to lower indoor water usage
✅Ways to improve water retention in the soil, such as sheet mulching, installing a rain garden with climate appropriate plantings
✅Ways to lower outdoor water usage, such as installing rainwater catchment systems and drip irrigation

If you want to see more examples which include in depth details, visit dailyacts.org/lrp

*Only Petaluma residents may apply at this time*

We'd like to share our gratitude for some organizations who helped make these projects at Miwok Park and Miwok Valley Charter School a success!🌱🎉

💧 provided engineering support by designing a rain tank system at the school to water newly planted trees, and a rain garden at the park.
💪 corpsmembers spread mulch, compost and rolled out cardboard to sheet mulch the lawn in place gaining new green job skills.
🌯 helped bring volunteers to our events and nourished them with burritos.
🌳 planted beautiful native trees at both locations.

We are so grateful for our community, and feel deeply inspired seeing what we can accomplish together when we connect people, groups and agencies with a common cause. Thank you for being a part of it all!🫶

Our Community Planting Day at Miwok School was a success!😁🎉

Thanks to each of our volunteers and the cool weather, we were able to complete this massive project. This was truly a community effort!

What used to be 12,390 sq ft of thirsty lawn, is now a drip-irrigated, water-wise pollinator hedgerow containing over 900 plants.🌱🌿🐝🦋🐦

In addition to being beautiful and supporting local biodiversity, this lawn conversion will save 290,800 gallons of water annually, that's roughly 22,000 loads of laundry PER YEAR!🤯💧

We are so excited to see these plants flourish and create learning opportunities for the students at Miwok Valley Charter School!

In the weeks leading up to this event, we worked with Conservation Corps North Bay to prepare the site by sheet mulching the lawn and laying drip irrigation.

If you want to learn more about upcoming events and programs, as well as how you can do this in your own yard, check out our website at dailyacts.org and sign up for our newsletter 🫶

Thanks to the help of over 50 volunteers, our planting day at Miwok Park in Petaluma was a success!🎉On this hot and sunny Friday, we planted a pollinator hedgerow and rain garden that spans 9,300 square feet and includes 1,100 plants.😲

This is no ordinary garden transformation. Converting the lawn to a drip-irrigated garden with drought tolerant plants will save 235,100 gallons of water annually. To put that in perspective, that's about 18,000 loads of laundry per year!💧

Not only is this transformation saving water, but it will support local bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds by creating food and habitat to sustain them for years to come.🐝🦋 The rain garden will also help slow, sink, and store water in an area of the park that previously experienced flooding.

The planning and preparation for this project has been in the works for months and it has been so satisfying to watch it come to fruition. Funding for this project came from the Land Resilience Partnership.

If you want to be part of our next project, you don't have to wait long. Next Saturday, May 18th we are heading next door to Miwok Valley Charter School from 9AM - 2PM to plant an even larger garden! Free burritos from Mi Pueblo will be provided by Rebuilding Together Petaluma to all volunteers. 🌯 Bring a friend, or two— we can use all the help we can get!
