The good and bad of last week’s election

The way we vote is changing and conservatives need to adapt

Some takeaways from last week’s spring election. 96 PERCENT IS NOT 96 PERCENT. It happened again. A massive surge of late votes were dumped into the election night vote results at the very end, reversing the outcome of the election. Conservatives remain deeply suspicious about this. In this instance, with “96 percent” of the vote total reported, the giant Milwaukee Public Schools tax referendum was losing. But then the vote dump of thousands poured in and the referendum passed. People keep asking “how can this happen?” despite the fact that it’s been explained again and again.

So here goes, again. In communities that count absentee and early voting in one central location (like Milwaukee), the totals of those votes are added in after they are processed and in Milwaukee that’s usually late. More people now vote in Milwaukee before the election than on so-called “election day” so the late dump is often more votes than the “96 percent” already counted. The 96 percent refers to election day precincts, not the number of total votes. It confuses people. And, since liberals are still more likely to vote in advance of the election, the late dump will produce massive liberal margins that often flip races. Which leads to: CONSERVATIVES HAVE TO VOTE EARLY. Last week’s “election day” was as miserable as any you could imagine. Here in southeastern Wisconsin there was an all-day driving windy rain. In northeastern Wisconsin, there was a blizzard. Half-hearted voters (the ones who decide elections) aren’t going to go out in that weather. If the other side has 95 percent of their people vote in advance, and our side has 55 percent procrastinators who try to do it all in one day, we are permanently doomed.

The national and the state GOP is making early voting a priority this year but it certainly doesn’t help that Donald Trump, in his obsessive inability to let go out of 2020, is still railing about the evils of absentee voting. If he doesn’t embrace such voting this year, he will lose again.

BROOKFIELD IS THE NEW WAUWATOSA. The margins were razor-thin but the liberals narrowly won the Elmbrook School Board election and keep control of the board. Two outstanding conservative candidates ran but it wasn’t enough to overcome thousands in state Democratic Party money (likely from George Soros) and the very real fact that the once conservative community has been infiltrated with liberal newcomers.

Wauwatosa is 10 years ahead of Brookfield in this trend and the results are there for all to say. The Wauwatosa schools are an over-taxed train wreck with discipline problems and crashing test scores. What moved west from Milwaukee to Wauwatosa is still moving west and is infecting Brookfield and, to some extent, eastern Menomonee Falls.

MOST CONSERVATIVE SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES WIN. Despite years of orchestrated national media attention and brutal harassment of conservative school board members, and a petulant teaching staff that includes some unprofessional cry-babying hacks, voters in Waukesha solidly kept their school board in the hands of conservatives. This was despite the same influx of Democratic Party money described above in Elmbrook. The same thing happened in Menomonee Falls where leftists failed to oust conservative school board incumbents.

WHEN REPUBLICAN LEADERS ACTUALLY TRY, THEY WIN. It was another banner year for Waukesha County Republicans and their “WisRed” campaign in which virtually all local candidates endorsed by the county GOP won. It takes a lot of work to screen all those candidates and distribute the materials but it is very helpful, especially to voters in low profile races who want to vote conservative but are often buffaloed by leftists who don’t admit they are leftist.

On the other hand, the Milwaukee County Republican Party, the second largest county GOP group in the state, was ineffectual and generally AWOL. It didn’t even take the opportunity to stage opposition events to the MPS referendum. The Washington County Republican group is similarly lard-butted. But Republican groups in Kenosha, Racine and Ozaukee counties all did well in getting their words out. Non-partisan elections are now very partisan and will only be won by conservatives if local Republicans follow Waukesha County’s lead and engage in them.

ZUCKERBUCKS IS NOW ILLEGAL. The state Constitutional amendments banning outside groups from hijacking local election operations from compliant liberal cities both passed. That’s good but, in truth, the left didn’t put up much of a fight against the ballot questions. The 2024 leftist voter mobilization effort has a different playbook. With Wisconsin being one of seven battleground states that will decide the presidential election, look for as much $700 million (likely more) to be spent in this state on campaign ads and massive canvassing operations aimed at getting every Democrat vote squeezed out as possible. They have already achieved virtual 100 percent voting on college campuses. This year’s battleground will be renters, senior care residents and criminals who have just finished their probation or supervision.
