Saturday 3/26 is Orval Day!

Orval is one of only five beers on our little beer list at Meetinghouse, & one of only two that isn’t a house beer.

Why?

A few reasons.

Orval was very important to , our predecessor in this space. Their back bar wall was adorned with a massive Orval mural, bottles from multiple dates were always readily available, Orval glass were themselves decor on the back bar. This room was synonymous with Orval. So we serve this beer in part as a gesture of reverence for the decade & a half of amazing work Memphis did here.

Additionally, I’ve just always appreciated Orval for being totally singular. Like our other steady ‘guest beer’ Guinness, Orval is a style unto itself. Iconic, strange, bold, elemental. The center of an international cult of followers. Yet it could hardly be less like Guinness as a drink. Where Guinness is soft, creamy & nearly flat, with an alcohol content set for session drinking, Orval leaps from the bottle with furious carbonation, & an alcohol content that suggests maybe we save this one for special occasions. We think the two beers live together quite happily on our list.

Finally, Philadelphia’s modern beer culture is strongly rooted in a fascination with Belgian imports (thanks in large part to ). But Belgian beer has fallen somewhat out of fashion amid the dominance of hazy hoppy beers, smoothie sours, big stouts, & indeed even the more recent fascination with Czech- and German-style Lagers. & that makes me sad, as someone who kind of discovered beer through Belgian imports – strange & wildly varied beers, always with the distinctive stamp of some house microbes. Orval embodies a lot of what I find special about Belgian beer.

So on Saturday, for , we won’t be running specials, or pushing any sort of fanfare. We’ll just be serving this special beer as we do six days a week – from well-kept bottles, in proper glassware, with a careful pour. But being a new venue for Orval Day, we’ll do it all with an extra appreciation for the lineage we’re taking part in by serving this beer in this space.

What a beautiful night to dine outside. We just popped in to to have a few of their house designed beers and nibble some of our new favorites.

If your in the neighborhood maybe we’ll see you. We are so happy for the opportunity to hang out in the outdoor space and enjoy this sweet autumnal evening.

This place radiates community and we are thankful that our family can still have a place that not only brings back amazing memories but can create new ones with our friends. If you have not had the chance to check it out, this weekend looks to be exquisite.

We know you love us and have wonderful memories here but please don’t steal our stuff. We recognize that certain little pieces of Memphis are near and dear to many of us but don’t take it as it’s yours it’s ours and our friends taking over May want that piece to stay here. If not there are lots of folks in the family that may want it. In a few weeks we may sell some of the memorabilia but we are not quite sure yet and we don’t want our beautiful home to be scarred.

We have ordered new glasses that should be in in a few weeks for purchase as well as our old 80s Philadelphia Eagles inspired Kelly Green Crewnecks and long sleeve Ts designed by the amazingly talented . Keith is also working on limited edition prints of our bar originally painted in our first few years when he was our day bartender. Do there will be options for you to have something that reminds you of our beautiful home.

We been overwhelmed by your love for us and it’s been a whirlwind seeing so many old faces this last week. Please be patient as we have not been this busy since our heyday and we are doing the best we can. We will on any given night run out of some things and hope you understand that we are really working hard to make the last few weeks as memorable as the rest of our run.

The beers are pouring, the food as always is delicious, come see us and say goodbye but please be respectful and treat our home as lovingly as you always have☺️

What began as a little restaurant at Memphis and Cumberland grew into a place that celebrated amazing things over 15 years. So many great memories have been made.

In 2008, our first year, the Phillies won the World Series, and we’ll never forget that moment shared with all of our new friends and family at the Memphis Taproom.

A few years later we welcomed Guy Fieri and Diners Drive-Ins and Dives and the craziness that followed the original and subsequent airings of our episode.

The Hot Dog Truck came along and we enjoyed cans and dogs while watching the Phils in the Beer Garden.

SUPER BOWL CHAMPS! Who can forget watching the Eagles finally winning the Lombardi trophy and our guy Nick Foles hoisting the MVP trophy. (If you see Keith Greiman ask him about telling Nick’s dad that he (Keith) wasn’t into football while he sat at our little bar. )

Just a few months back the Phills had an impromptu run into the World Series. And so many of you chose to enjoy this improbable post-season while cheering every play with us.

Countless and amazing beer debuts, celebrations, and of course, Thirstoberfest , our annual celebration of you, our guests and friends, enjoying up to 40 different beers in one day.

We are extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant and that we were able to succeed as long as we have.

For a restaurant to survive and thrive in Philadelphia for 15 years is an accomplishment of which we can all be proud. We could not have done it without all of you. We could not done it without our amazing staff and we thank everyone who worked here over the past 15 years.

We have some pretty special draft beers in our cold storage and have started breaking them out. We’ll continue to pour the some of the best beer in the world as we say goodbye. We also plan to have have an amazing sale of special sours and aged bottles from our cellar and will be posting about that as it happens.

We can’t thank you all enough, try to get in and see us over the next few weeks and share with us some of your memories.

Our Story

You got questions? We got answers.

What are your hours of operation?
We are open from 11:30am to 2am Mon-Fri.
Our kitchen kicks out food until 11pm, Mon-Sat + 'til 10pm on Sundays.
We offer brunch on Saturdays & Sundays from 11am-3pm.

Our Beer Garden is open whenever it is nice. (Dogs allowed)

What kind of beer do you serve?
We have an ever shifting beer list of selections that either move us currently or we are simply rekindling a romance with. While it seems dizzying to select what to serve in such an overcrowded market we tend to stick with great beer made by even better people. We try desperately to stay away from trends, but revel in relying on craftsmanship and good business practices to help us make our decisions. While rare beer is a lot of fun to serve and drink we tend to pour the most sought after offerings on a Monday afternoon as opposed to squirreling away one keg and centering a whole event around it. No, quite frankly we would rather be good hosts and allow our guests to sit back, relax, and enjoy their beer unmolested by the hordes. Check here for our awesome beer list: http://memphistaproom.com/tap/
