IDMS 2024: Steps to Freedom - An Innovative Guided Tour of Johnson House Historic Site | Global Philadelphia Join a docent led 60-minute guided tour of the Johnson House Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark and Underground Railroad station.
In honor of MLK Day 2023, local mosaicist Ellen Tiberino led a workshop with PAFA artists from the staff and faculty to create a collaborative mosaic, now installed at PAFA’s Hamilton Building’s west entrance. Ellen’s mother, a Ellen Powell Tiberino (‘61), attended PAFA on a scholarship and received the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship in 1959, becoming the second Black woman after Laura Wheeler Waring to receive this honor and traveled extensively through Europe. Moe Brooker, also a PAFA graduate, admired Tiberino’s presence at the academy, describing her as dazzling and memorable. Ellen married Joseph Tiberino, also an artist, and the family has been called the “Wyeths of West Philadelphia.”
You can see Ellen’s own artwork exhibited alongside her mother’s at the Johnson House Historic Site, a rare intact historic Underground Railroad waystation in Philadelphia, this Saturday March 23rd, Ellen will discuss her mother’s life and art. Visit https://buff.ly/3vnHpXt for details.
The collaborative mosaic, crafted of mini mosaics individually created by PAFA participants and assembled and integrated into a larger mosaic piece by Ellen, symbolizes our interconnectedness, especially considering her mother’s ties to PAFA.

In celebration of Women's History Month, the Johnson House Historic Site and FunTimes Magazine are hosting an art exhibit on Saturday, March 23, 2024.
The show features a family of artists, including Philadelphia’s most prominent female artists, the late African American artist Ellen Powell Tiberino (1937 to 1992). She was known for her pastels, oils, pencil drawings, and sculptures. The Philadelphia artist’s realistic and dramatic works reflect the history of the Black experience, particularly women, whom she often represented in haunting colors.
Enjoy the exhibit and a discussion and get an opportunity to buy the art. Register in advance: [email protected] or 215-438-1768 or johnsonhouse.org.

William Still: Prominent abolitionist, Father of the Underground Railroad and secretary of the Philadelphia Antislavery Society, participated in abolition meetings at the Johnson House.
In 1872, Still published an account of the Underground Railroad, based on the carefully recorded secret notes he had kept in diaries starting in the 1850s. It went through three editions and in 1876 was displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.
"The UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. A Record of Facts Authentic Narratives, Letters &c., Narrating the Hardships, Hair-breadth Escapes and Death Struggles of the Slaves in Their Efforts for Freedom, As Related By Themselves and Others, or Witnessed by the Author: Together With Sketches of Some of the Largest Stock Holders, and Most Liberal Aiders and Advisers of the Road."

From Germantown Info Hub
For more than 20 years, the Johnson House has been the proud host of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival in Germantown, earning the title of the oldest Juneteenth festival in Philadelphia. Throughout the last eight years, Tieshka K. Smith has skillfully captured the essence of this annual event through her camera lens.
This year marked a special occasion as the Johnson House and Historic Germantown jointly presented the "Documenting the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival in Germantown" exhibition.
In a collection of interviews with the Germantown Info Hub, Curator and Photographer Tieshka K. Smith, Johnson House Executive Director Cornelia Swinson, and Historic Germantown Executive Director Tuomi Forrest shared insights into the exhibition and its profound significance for the Germantown community.

"Each day Cornelia Swinson walks into her office in Germantown’s Johnson House, she hears echoes of its rich history. The grand, three-story house, faced in ledge stone, looks pretty much the same as it did when it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, with the original 1760s woodwork and window panes."

Å Waystation for the Underground Railroad
The Johnson House Historic Site, a Center for Social Advocacy (CSA), is a historic house museum that represents what everyday people have done and can do to make a difference in their community and beyond. Our example of partnership—between Africans seeking freedom and the "infidel" abolitionist Johnson family—serves as a catalyst to inspire, uplift and empower current and future generations. We accomplish our goals by creating interactive educational opportunities, fostering community initiatives and preserving the historic integrity of the house, grounds and outlier buildings.
Built in 1768, the Johnson House was one of Germantown’s oldest existing year-round homes. It looks much the same today as it did in 1768. The dark stone, cut and dressed in the front, is native to the area. The Dutch doors are original to the house as is much of the woodwork, flooring, and glass. Domestic objects belonging to the Johnson family are on exhibit throughout our historic site.
The Johnson family owned a substantial amount of land in Germantown and was one of the town’s wealthiest families. They were active supporters of the Concord School; Germantown’s first English-speaking educational institution. John Johnson’s son, Samuel, was a member of the first school board and the first town council in Germantown. The Concord School, also a historic site, is located across the street from the Johnson House and open to the public for tours by appointment only.
When Samuel Johnson married in 1805, he moved into the Johnson House with his bride Jennett Rowland Johnson. As did many Quakers, Samuel and Jennett promoted their anti-slavery beliefs by offering their home as a station on the Underground Railroad. They provided sanctuary, food, clothing, and transportation to untold numbers of African freedom seekers. Through research, we know that William Still, prominent abolitionist, Father of the Underground Railroad and secretary of the Philadelphia Anti=slavery Society, participated in "meetings" at Johnson House. Tradition holds that prominent abolitionist Harriet Tubman visited the Johnson House.
