Two hundred years ago today, August 12, 1824, French naturalist Charles Alexandre Lesueur visited the Haines family at Wyck. A relic of that visit, this sketch shows the family enjoying tea and the breeze in the recently finished conservatory. Clockwise from left: Ann Haines, Jane Bowne Haines I, J. Lukens, and James Pemberton Parke. Swipe through to see a closeup and a view the conservatory today, where the print hangs on the northeast wall.

There’s more to this little printed box than meets the eye! Looking inside, you’ll see a whole miniature world created by layers of cut paper attached together like an accordion. These charming paper “peep shows” were incredibly popular in the early 19th century, and were optical & scalar amusements that delighted the eye. This particular object depicts a scene at the Nürnberg und Furth railroad on the day of its opening 1835. This 6 km long single track line was the first steam-powered railway in Germany. This object may have been bought by Jane Bowne Haines I or Ann Haines as an educational tool for the children at Wyck, or just as a family amusement. [Nürnburg und Furth Railroad Peep Show; Germany; ca. 1835-1837; Paper, hand-colored etching; Wyck Association 88.2119]

May at Wyck means roses!

Kicking off the month with some good news - Remember the Tausendshon rose that was vandalized last summer? Happy to report that all the extra care and good energy from our followers worked. Today the rose is a bit patchy, as expected, but green, vibrant, and alive!

Swipe ➡️ to see it's first, beautiful bloom of the season, and ➡️ again to see what it looked like after the incident last summer.

We look forward to sharing and celebrating the roses with you this year! Thank you for your support!
