Women's History Month is almost over, but we asked Stavropoula Tjoumakaris, MD, FAANS, FACS, FAHA, what advice she would give to young women embarking on their own careers in medicine.
"Find mentors who will support and guide you along the way. Seek out strong female role models in the field who can offer invaluable advice and encouragement.
Stay curious and never stop learning. Medicine is a constantly evolving field, so be open to new ideas and advancements. Embrace lifelong learning as a cornerstone of your career.
Remember the importance of self-care. Balancing the demands of a medical career with personal wellness is crucial for long-term success and fulfillment.
And finally, never underestimate the power of empathy. Medicine is as much about caring for the individual as it is about treating the disease. Cultivate compassion and understanding in your interactions with patients and colleagues alike."
Our next Philadelphia Brain Aneurysm/AVM Support Group meeting is Wednesday March 20th at 6:30 pm.
Open to all patients and their loved ones/ caregivers from the Philadelphia area.

An estimated 6.7 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm or 1 in 50 people. Brain aneurysms are treatable, which is why identifying an aneurysm before rupture is critical.
Almost 500,000 deaths worldwide each year are caused by brain aneurysms, and half the victims are younger than 50. Know the facts. Share the facts. Save a life.
Knowing the signs and symptoms is critical, as most deaths are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding.
It’s time to reinvent the person you want to be🧠🎗️

Our patients are by far the most inspiring part of this job. Every day I am humbled by the resilience of my patients and their families as they navigate the challenges of their diagnosis and treatment. One patient of mine decided to share her experience with Moyamoya disease - a rare but severe neurovascular condition associated with stroke in young patients. This disease frequently requires cerebrovascular bypass for treatment - one of the most technically challenging, yet profoundly rewarding procedures we perform in neurosurgery. This patient, and many others like her, serve a constant reminder of the ability for people to overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. This is her story, which she wanted me to share.
