Dr. Marinos Dalakas, a Neurologist at Jefferson Health, is one of the leading experts in the world researching and treating stiff person syndrome. Stiff person syndrome was virtually unknown prior to Celine Dion revealing her diagnosis in 2022. Celine's willingness to share her story has sparked much needed discussion about this rare and often underdiagnosed condition.
What to know about stiff person syndrome as Celine Dion declares she is 'not going to die' of the neurological disease Experts explain the symptoms and treatment options for stiff person syndrome, which is caused by an autoimmune disorder's attacks on the neurological system.

Congratulations to Neurosurgeon Ritam Ghosh, MD, for recently performing the first venous sinus stent procedure for Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) at the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience - Jefferson Washington Township Hospital.
IIH is a condition that leads to increased pressure within the brain — often leading to debilitating symptoms, such as severe headaches, vision loss, and tinnitus. The cause of this condition is unknown; however, many patients with IIH have also been found to have a narrowing of the major veins in their brain. During this minimally invasive procedure, a stent is placed within the affected venous sinuses. Opening up the narrowing within these veins has been shown to decrease the pressure within the brain, which lessens the IIH symptoms and improves patients' quality of life.
This procedure — now being offered by neurosurgeons at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital — signifies a significant advancement in neurointerventional techniques and our dedication to improving lives. Thank you to all the team involved!

Celebrating Women’s History Month with some inspiration from our very own Dr. Stavropoula Tjoumakaris! We are so lucky to have her as part of our Neuroscience team!
Women's History Month is almost over, but we asked Stavropoula Tjoumakaris, MD, FAANS, FACS, FAHA, what advice she would give to young women embarking on their own careers in medicine.
"Find mentors who will support and guide you along the way. Seek out strong female role models in the field who can offer invaluable advice and encouragement.
Stay curious and never stop learning. Medicine is a constantly evolving field, so be open to new ideas and advancements. Embrace lifelong learning as a cornerstone of your career.
Remember the importance of self-care. Balancing the demands of a medical career with personal wellness is crucial for long-term success and fulfillment.
And finally, never underestimate the power of empathy. Medicine is as much about caring for the individual as it is about treating the disease. Cultivate compassion and understanding in your interactions with patients and colleagues alike."
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Michael Sperling, the proud recipient of the Herbert H. Jasper Award from the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. This prestigious award is presented to leaders in Neurophysiology for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the field of clinical neurophysiology including research, teaching, and mentoring.
Dr. Sperling previously received the J. Kiffin Penry award from the American Epilepsy Society in 2018 for excellence in clinical care of patients, scholarship/educational activities, and mentorship that has resulted in improving the quality of life for people with epilepsy.
Receiving both awards is a great honor that few receive and reflects the international impact of Dr. Michael Sperling's work. We are extremely proud to have Dr. Sperling as a member of our Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience Jefferson Health team!
