Conoscevi la storia di Catterina DeCarlo Davia?

Il 6 dicembre 1907, il disastro minerario di Monongah, West Virginia, causò la tragica morte di oltre 360 persone, tra cui 171 italiani. Tra le vittime c'era Vittorio Davia, il marito di Catterina DeCarlo Davia. Rimasta sola con cinque figli, Catterina dovette affrontare una lotta durissima per garantire un futuro ai suoi bambini.

Conosciuta come “Ciuccia Catterina” per la sua ossessione nel raccogliere carbone, Catterina affrontò discriminazioni e pregiudizi, ma non si arrese. Dopo un difficile ritorno in Italia, tornò a Monongah e, con il denaro rimasto, comprò una casa, coltivò ortaggi, e continuò a vendere carbone per sostenere i suoi figli.

Il suo coraggio e determinazione sono un faro di speranza e resilienza. Ricordiamo Catterina per il suo straordinario spirito e la sua lotta per un futuro migliore.

The iconic formations and vibrant trails painted over the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Center City were truly a sight to behold. 💚🤍❤️

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Monongah these past two days to pay tribute to the Italian workers all over the world who perished at work, and in particular to the 171 miners who lost their lives in 1907.

Let’s keep together the memory of this day of remembrance.

Today on August 8th, we gathered in front of the Heroine Statue in Monongah, to commemorate Italian Labor Sacrifice Day with the mayor and the community of the town, Italian associations, and the patronage of the CGIE.

The bell rang at 10:20am, in a emotional moment of reflection, to remember the victims of the mining disaster that struck the town in 1907 at the exact time of the explosion.

Our gathering served as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice and the one of all Italian workers abroad.

Thanks to Counselor Vincenzo Arcobelli, the The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), the Sons of Italy of Morgantown and the Mayor of Monongah John Palmer.

Ogni anno, ricordiamo l’8 agosto la Giornata del Sacrificio del Lavoro Italiano nel Mondo, per riconoscere il lavoro e il sacrificio dei connazionali emigrati all’estero.
L’8 agosto è il giorno della ricorrenza della tragedia mineraria di del 1956, in Belgio, ove persero la vita 262 minatori, tra cui 136 italiani, una tragedia simile a quella di Monongah avvenuta quasi 50 anni prima in West Virginia, USA dove perirono 171 minatori italiani, su 360 lavoratori.

This evening at the Monongah Cemetery, to commemorate the Italian Labor Sacrifice Day.

We laid a wreath of flowers in memory of the victims of the mining disaster that shook the community of the town on December 6, 1907.

We pay tribute to the 171 Italian miners who lost their lives on that cold winter morning. Their sacrifice and the impact on their families and community will never be forgotten.

Italian Labor Sacrifice Day Worldwide: August 7th & 8th

Today and tomorrow have been dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of Italian workers abroad, who left their home country to embark on perilous travels and faced rough living and working conditions to build a future for their loved ones. This dedication honors two tragedies.

The Monongah Disaster in West Virginia, which claimed over 360 miners’ lives, including 171 Italian migrants on the morning of December 6th, 1907. Beyond the lost lives, entire families were affected, with many women widowed and nearly 500 children left fatherless. The second tragedy honored is the Marcinelle Disaster of 1956 in Belgium, where 262 miners, including 136 Italians, tragically lost their lives.

On Italian Labor Sacrifice Day, we must also remember the 1909 Cherry, Illinois mining tragedy that killed 269 men, many from Bologna, Modena and Piemonte, Italy. This disaster resulted in America’s first worker compensation laws.

“Maintaining the memory and attention for the Monongah tragedy, on the occasion of the Day of the Sacrifice of Italian Labor in the World, is a duty for me and for all Italian emigrants who have contributed and contribute to the cultural and economic growth of the host country”, emphasized Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Today and tomorrow a series of events will take place in Monongah, West Virginia to honor and remember Italian Labor Sacrifice Day.

3️⃣ Confirm your details and initiate the request.
4️⃣ Download your Tax Code Assignment certificate directly!

If you encounter issues downloading the certificate:

1️⃣ Register on FAST IT or log in if you already have an active account.
2️⃣ Request “Online Association” by clicking on “Consular Registry and AIRE” and then “View Your Personal Record.”
3️⃣ You will receive a confirmation email within 2 working days.
