Hi there! It’s been awhile since I’ve introduced myself, so here is a bit about me. I’m Dr. Susanna Satten, DAc, LAc, DiplAc — which means I’m a Licenced Acupuncturist and I have a Doctorate in Acupuncture.

Here’s a bit about my personal story, and also what I like to treat:

🤕 I’ve had chronic migraines since my teens, and I’ve tried everything imaginable to alleviate them (and I’m still constantly trying new things). But, acupuncture and guasha treatments are the most effective ways to keep them under control. This is a small part of what drew me to study acupuncture and East-Asian medicine.

🏦 I went back to graduate school for acupuncture after working in the corporate world as banker for 9 years. While there were things I loved about corporate banking, I decided be making much better use of my talents if I utilized my energy to people feel better and made a real difference in their day to day lives.

📍I started acupuncture school in 2012, (so 2024 marked 12 years of acupuncture). After graduating in 2016, I started my acupuncture practice in Rittenhouse. Since then, I’ve given 8,500+ treatments to all sorts of wonderful humans, and I truly enjoy what I do.

❤️ I love treating chronic stress, anxiety, depression and the impacts those and other emotions have on our bodies.

🤕 I also really enjoy treating the physical body (think pain and injuries) because they’re usually more straightforward to fix. It’s fun to see the massive improvements my patients make from day to day so they can get back to doing what they love!

🤰Women’s health concerns — fertility, pregnancy, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, PMS, vulvar/vaginal issues, perimenopausal symptoms, etc. are another big aspect of my practice. As a woman, it is great to be able to support other women.

☺️ Facial rejuvenation treatments and holistic microneedling are also a specialty of mine. I love helping people feel better about their appearance and supporting “beauty from the inside out” by subtly reducing wrinkles and scars, increasing collagen, improving brightness, and so much more. I’m not a makeup person so this has always been my way of making sure I look my best.

“Susanna is the absolute best! I commute into Philly once/week, and one of the bright spots of those days is getting into her office, chatting about anything and everything going on, and then getting an extremely personalized treatment that includes needles, moxa, sometimes cupping or guasha, depending on what’s going on.

The treatments help with so many things, especially headaches and sinuses (I don’t think l’ve had one sinus infection since I started seeing her), digestion, sleep, and most of all stress.

Susanna is kind, caring, warm, brilliant, and professional. She is an excellent and empathetic listener who is always observant of not only what is going on in the moment but also patterns that may arise over time. I cannot recommend her highly enough!”

“Where do I even begin? I am certain that Susanna is a huge reason that I am staring at my almost on one-year-old daughter. Our miracle. I came to Susanna in the beginning stages of my fertility journey and not only was she an ear to listen, and a shoulder to cry on, she was an irreplaceable piece to the puzzle that resulted in my daughter being here on this earth.

I had never even dreamt of having acupuncture before seeing Susanna. It was so much more than I ever expected and the benefits were immeasurable - not only in my journey to have my daughter but in my personal journey to wellness.”

“Susanna is absolutely the best. She is thoughtful, talented, and radiates kindness.
She always creates a safe and calm setting for every session and when I leave I feel better physically and mentally.

She is very patient with me and really listens to every concern I have - something I have not always experienced with other health professionals. She makes me feel heard and she is willing to answer / explain any questions I have about treatment. She is so knowledgeable and offers so much, tailored to your individual needs.

I feel very grateful that I found her and am able to work with her for my own issues (including vertigo, anxiety, muscle pain, digestive issues). I would highly, highly recommend her services to anyone who is curious!

🍜 SOUP SEASON 🍲

white bean, kale, and sausage soup recipe

- 1 onion, diced small
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- olive oil
- 2 carrots, diced small
- 2 celery stalks, diced small
- 1 pound of raw, spicy sausage
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 6-8 cups of chicken stock
- 1 large potato, peeled and diced small
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped
- Parmesan cheese rind
- 2 cans of white beans, drained and rinsed (I like cannellini or great northern
- 1 bunch of Lacinato kale (aka dinosaur or Tuscan), eeriness and chopped
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered
- grated fresh Parmesan
- Salt and pepper

In the bottom of the large heavy, bottomed pot, sautéed the diced onions and garlic in a few tablespoons of olive oil for 5 to 7 minutes.

Add in three chopped carrots and celery, sauté for a few more minutes

Remove the casing from the sausages and break them into small pieces over three veggies. Then add in the tomato paste and stir.

Add in the chicken stock, potato, beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaves, rosemary, and bring up to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes.

Add the chopped kale and tomatoes. Simmer for another 5-7 minutes, or until the kale is cooked to your liking. Season to taste with pepper and salt.

Serve with grated Parmesan cheese and olive oil on top of each bowl. And some toast if you like to dunk.

I think it’s even better the next day!

“Susanna is a wonderful acupuncturist!! She creates a safe and comfortable space in which to receive care. Susanna's communication is wonderful. Not only does she leave plenty of time for me to discuss what is going on with me on any particular day, but she also teaches me about what her treatments do and the theory behind them.

I always leave my appointments feeling more relaxed and balanced.

After having two major surgeries over the course of two years, Susanna's treatments have really helped me to reset and get my health back on track.

Highly recommend!!!”

✨ G U A S H A for M I G R A I N E S ✨

Guasha is one of the many modalities I offer as part of my acupuncture sessions. It happens also be one of my favorite things (to do, and have done on me). Here, you can see it on my upper back and neck, done expertly to me by while away on vacation to help alleviate a terrible migraine and associated neck and upper back pain.

While it can look gnarly, it actually feels quite good and has so many benefits. Some people call it the “best kept secret in East-Asian medicine”

Guasha is a healing technique of traditional East-Asian medicine. Sometimes called “coining, spooning or scraping”, Guasha is defined as instrument-assisted unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of the body surface to intentionally create transitory therapeutic petechiae called ‘sha’ representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis.

Raising sha removes blood and lymph stagnation considered pathogenic in traditional East-Asian Medicine.

Modern research shows the transitory therapeutic petechiae produce an anti-inflammatory and immune-protective effect that persists for days following a single Guasha treatment. This accounts for the immediate relief that patients feel from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting, etc., and is why Guasha is effective in acute and chronic internal organ disorders including liver inflammation in hepatitis. The wonderful effects of this treatment are immense, and totally safe! ✨

A G G R E S S I V E E N E R G Y T R E A T M E N T

This is one of my favorite treatments to give and receive. This powerful treatment releases ‘aggressive energy’ or high states of tension and stress often when other treatments don’t. It can provide longer lasting results when other treatment’s benefits just don’t seem to be holding. The red marks around the needles show me what energetic organs are holding onto the aggressive energy. I know the treatment is finished when the redness clears.

Can you think of a time you felt so irritated, agitated, and worked up about something that you just felt like jumping out of your skin? Or perhaps you know someone who is often agitated and unsettled. Maybe just being around this person impacts the way you feel. If someone makes you uncomfortable with their presence alone, it’s likely they have aggressive energy. It’s considered a block to treatment progress. Think about it, when someone has emotionally toxic energy, how can they heal? AE is known as a clearing treatment in the tradition of Worsely Style 5 Element Acupuncture.

Aggressive Energy may feel like:
- Extreme Frustration
- Agitation
- Short-tempered or annoyed with people
- Everyone around you is wrong / off-base
- Uncomfortable in your skin

People who have this treatment often report feeling like themselves again after it.

👅 T O N G U E D I A G N O S I S 👅

Your tongue is a microcosm of your internal organs where each area corresponds to a different organ.

I look at a few aspects of your tongue:
1. Tongue Coat: Can be thick, thin, not rooted, or have a yellow tint
2. Tongue Body Color: Can be red, not red enough, pale, purple, even bluish
3. Tongue Shape: Can be thin, swollen, puffy, cracked, have a pointy or rounded tip, or have scalloped edges.
4. Tongue Activity: Can quiver or tremble, be sift, or deviate to one side

These are all diagnostic and let acupuncturists know more about your body’s imbalances and help me know which acupuncture points will help you best.

The coat tells us about the level of hydration in your body and the quality of the fluid. For instance, if your tongue is “peeled” meaning there is no tongue coat at all, it tells us that your body is deficient in body fluids. A tongue with a thick white coat indicates an excess of fluids.

The color tells us the condition of the internal organs. If the color is dark red, the condition is one of intense heat in at least one organ system. If it’s pale, there may be a blood deficiency or a cold pattern.

The shape indicates if there's an excess or deficiency in the organ networks.

The activity tells us what kind of underlying Chinese medical pattern we may be dealing with.

So what’s a normal healthy tongue look like? The color should be a vibrant pink and vital color like a fresh piece of meat. The coating should be thin, white and slightly moist.

So go ahead, take a look at your tongue. Ask me about your tongue at your next appointment.

✨ H E L L O ✨

Hi there! I’m Dr. Susanna Satten, DAc, LAc, DiplAc (but please call me Susanna). I’ve been posting on here for 7 years but I’ve never introduced myself and told you my story.

🏦 I became an acupuncturist after working in the corporate world as banker for 9 years. While there were things I loved about corporate banking, I eventually decided I’d make better use of my talents if I utilized my energy to people feel better and making a real difference in their lives. Acupuncture has helped me personally in so many ways and I felt a natural draw to study it.

🤕 I’ve had chronic migraines since my teens, and acupuncture has been an immense help for me in keeping them better managed. It’s one of the many reasons I love acupuncture.

🧘🏻‍♀️ My first stop on my career change was becoming a yoga teacher in 2011. I’d already been practicing yoga regularly for 15 years at that point and I just wanted to know more about yoga and the philosophy of it all. So I did two yoga teacher trainings while I applied to acupuncture school and then waited for graduate school to start.

😆 I started acupuncture school in 2012, (which means that 2023 marks 11 years of acupuncture). After graduating in 2016, I started my acupuncture practice. Since then, I’ve given 8,000+ treatments to all sorts of wonderful humans.

❤️ I love treating stress, anxiety, depression and the impacts those and other emotions have on our bodies.

🤰I also work with all sorts of women’s health concerns - fertility, pregnancy, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, PMS, and more.

☺️ Facial rejuvenation treatments are also a specialty is mine. I love helping people feel better about their appearance. Treatments support “beauty from the inside out” by subtly reducing wrinkles, improving collagen, formation, reducing scars, improving brightness to the face, and so much more.

🤕 That said, I also really enjoy treating the physical body (think pain and injuries) because they’re usually more straightforward to fix. It’s fun to see the massive improvements my patients make from day to day so they can get back to doing what they love!

My fatigue has gone way down and my energy has gone way up since my sessions with Susanna!

I also get earseeds at the end of every session and love them — we usually do them for stress, energy, anxiety, and to curb cravings.

Acupuncture and Susanna have truly improved my life and health so much — highly recommended!”

✨ MY FIRST EVER NEEDLE ✨

This is a throwback to the first ever needle I ever inserted. It was 11 years ago when I was in my first term of acupuncture school. Our teacher in a lecture class about the history of East-Asian medicine (unexpectedly) handed out needles one day and had us needle our elbow at a point (LI11). I remember being so scared to do it. Would it hurt? How would it feel doing it to myself? I’d obviously had acupuncture countless times at this point in my life, as I’d already seen it’s numerous benefits before decided to go to grad school and become an acupuncturist. But I didn’t expect to be inserting my first needle that day. I didn’t even know the points yet!

I will never forget the thrill of that day, of that needle. It forever changed the course of my life. It was that day that I fully committed to being an acupuncturist, to this lifestyle of helping others through the lens of East-Asian medicine. It was the best decision I have ever made for myself. I never expected I’d become a Doctor of Acupuncture.

Thanks for being on this journey with me. I appreciate you all.

So much love to you all ❤️

- Dr. Susanna Satten, D.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Ac.
