Today at 1pm, VSCP LAW and Founding Partner Josh Van Naarden are presenting an event to raise awareness for the wrongfully convicted in Philadelphia. The event will include a panel discussion moderated by Eric Dyson and led by Josh and several exonerees during which Josh will discuss his extensive experience representing wrongfully convicted individuals in subsequent civil rights cases. VSCP LAW’s Founding Partner John Pinto recently presented at a Philadelphia Bar Association CLE “Navigating Venue: Strategies and Considerations in Light of Pennsylvania’s Revised Venue Rule in Med Mal Cases.” John was part of an esteemed panel of judges, appellate lawyers and trial attorneys that provided guidance on the recent venue rule change in PA medical malpractice cases and how that has impacted litigation strategies.

VSCP LAW’s John Pinto was recently invited to guest teach a Tort class to first year law students at Penn Law School. The class focused on John’s practice of catastrophic injury law and how basic tort principles apply every day in real world practice.
This exceptional group of 1L students were engaged and asked some really insightful and sophisticated questions.
We hope that John inspired some future lawyers to explore a career in plaintiff’s personal injury law!

VSCP LAW's Joshua Van Naarden was recently quoted in The Legal Intelligencer's article about the use of AI for Plaintiffs' personal injury firms:

Joshua Van Naarden of VSCP Law said he has also been hesitant to dive into AI tools, given the possibilities for the technology to hallucinate erroneous answers that can land an attorney in hot water if submitted to the court. Also, he said, much of what his firm does is very nuanced, and so he doubted the tools will be very helpful at this point.

“Unless I could be convinced that it would be a better resource than old-fashioned Westlaw, I think the cons so outweigh the pros to using it,” he said, adding that, part of what attorneys are paid to do is develop sophisticated briefs, and so off-loading that work to AI would essentially mean the attorneys would be getting paid for work they are not doing themselves. “Part of that fee is for our legal acumen, and part of that is used in legal writing.”

Last week VSCP LAW hosted a luncheon for mentees of the Pennsylvania Association for Justice Diverse Mentoring Initiative (DMI) during their summer clerkship program. DMI is a multifaceted program with a goal of placing law students from diverse backgrounds at Plaintiffs' personal injury firms and increasing diversity within the Plaintiff's bar. We enjoyed meeting these great future lawyers to talk our practice and the opportunities of pursuing a career as a Plaintiff's lawyer.

VSCP LAW’s Joshua Van Naarden was quoted in the Philly Inquirer article today regarding the lawsuit that he and associate Dan Rosner filed against a Philadelphia Homicide detective that deplorably abused his position of power and sexually assaulted the mother of a homicide victim - all while he was assigned as the detective to investigate the killing of her son.

A Philadelphia homicide detective who was assigned to investigate the 2020 fatal shooting of a man in North Philadelphia took advantage of that position to groom and sexually assault the victim’s mother, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court last month.

In the lawsuit, filed anonymously under the initials L.S., the woman alleged that what she experienced was part of a pattern of sexual misconduct that targeted victims and witnesses in order to take advantage of their desire for justice and Suchinsky’s unique position of power.

Joshua Van Naarden, the lawyer who filed the latest complaint, alleged that it was part of a larger pattern in the department, which has seen numerous allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years.
“We’re disturbed by the conduct of this detective who rose through the ranks to an elite squad within the Philadelphia Police Department,” he said, “and we’re also very concerned that his conduct was permitted to persist, as I understand our client is not the only one who fell victim to this detective.”

VSCP LAW’s Gregory Spizer and Julia Huxman Ronnebaum currently represent several victims of physical and sexual abuse at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center. This week, the PA Attorney General’s Office issued a grand jury report after conducting an in-depth investigation of the facility. The investigation revealed systemic problems and a “dangerous absence of oversight” that allowed horrific violence, sexual abuse and other maltreatment of youth to occur at the facility. (See Philly Inquirer article, below). Our firm looks forward to getting justice for our clients in this litigation and holding the responsible parties accountable.
