National Liberty Museum

The National Liberty Museum connects, educates, and inspires people to explore and advance the complex practice of liberty.

We are committed to building a society that values freedom of thought, civil discourse, respect for all people and the essential pursuit of liberty. From our home in Historic Philadelphia, the cradle of American democracy, the National Liberty Museum offers a contemporary perspective on the boldest, most innovative concept in America history: that liberty is - and must be - a shared pursuit if it is ever truly to be "for all."

Angel Cabrales is a Latino sculptor based in El Paso, Texas, whose work is an amalgamation of his upbringing resulting in social/political commentary with an engineered flare. His installation in In Pursuit: Artists' Perspectives on a Nation is comprised of two pieces. "The Pursuit of Happiness: A Venture in Migration is an interactive board game and video on the trials and tribulations migrants undergo as they come to our country," shares Angel. Five Lights references a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode and George Orwell's 1984 and "uses four lights to represent the rhetoric promoted by pundits and media, creating a new 'fact' of five lights while obfuscating migrants’ plights and the need to create a more humane discussion on the issue."

Our summer exhibition, In Pursuit: Artists' Perspectives on a Nation, opens this Friday! Several In Pursuit installations are meant to evoke direct responses or interactions from the viewer in response to historic events from the last few years. In his installation, Neon American Anthem, Alaska-based multi-disciplinary Tlingít and Unangax̂ artist Nicholas Galanin mounts a custom, neon blue sign offering patrons a proclamation and an invitation that reads, “I’ve composed a new American anthem: take a knee and scream until you can’t breathe.” Galanin envisions the work as a participatory performance piece inviting visitors to ring out with sounds of protest, mourning, or celebration.

Stop by Saturday, May 11 for our Community Open House to see this compelling piece in-person. The Open House features pay-what-you-wish admission and a textile workshop by exhibition artist Aram Han Sifuentes.

We are only nine days away from the opening of our summer exhibition, In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation. As a Brazilian multi-disciplinary artist based in Indiana, Artur Silva focuses his creative practice on networks of exchange, interrogating both capitalism and imperialist narratives. His In Pursuit installation, "All Threats Came in Waves", fills the gallery with several alien but seemingly familiar figures locked in identifiable yoga poses. The beings are clothed in vegetation and glow from monitors embedded in their forms and clothing with a jungle background on the gallery walls. On closer inspection, viewers will see the monitors display footage and images that tell a story of subterfuge and secret invasion as the US worked to topple the Brazilian government in the 1960s.

Join us May 11 for our Community Open House to see Silva’s captivating work in person, along with works by six other artists.

Her installation, Seedbed V, is a ruin, comprised of a classroom, garden, and bed, with custom-made bags arranged throughout the space that are meant to resemble oversized seeds. Each bag is a “go-bag,” containing supplies and keepsakes in case of an emergency, crisis, or separation.

We are only a few weeks away from the opening of our summer exhibition, In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation, on May 10. The exhibition, curated by Philadelphia Sculptors, includes two pieces by Korean American social practice and fiber artist Aram Han Sifuentes. “Memorial to Gun Violence: An AR-15 was Destroyed to Make this For You” and “I Often Think About How I’ll Stop Bullets from Entering Your Body” are a response to the rampant gun violence epidemic and escalating hate crimes against Asian Americans and a reflection on the constant fear and vigilance some feel in public spaces. The fabrics of Han Sifuentes’s installation are dyed with iron and pigment by Thomas Little’s project, A Rural Pen, which is derived from dissolved AR-15 assault rifles. The public is invited share their reflections, experiences, and opinions on gun violence by writing on paper with A Rural Pen.

Accompanying the opening of the exhibition, we invite visitors to our Community Open House on May 11 to see these large-scale installations and enjoy pay-what-you-wish admission!
