Apostolic Nunciature (Embassy of the Holy See) to Nigeria

Today, Tuesday, 16 July 2024, the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed His Excellency the Most Reverend Michael F. Crotty, Titular Archbishop of Lindisfarne, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria.

CURRICULUM OF ARCHBISHOP MICHAEL F. CROTTY

Archbishop Michael F. Crotty, a native of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, Ireland, was born on 26 March 1970. On 3 July 1994 he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cloyne (Ireland). After his priestly ordination he continued postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he obtained Licentiates in Ecclesiastical History and Canon Law and a doctorate in Ecclesiastical History.
On 1 July 2001, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and was assigned to the Apostolic Nunciature in Kenya, Nairobi. He subsequently served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Canada, Ottawa (2004-2007); the Apostolic Nunciature in Iraq and Jordan, Baghdad and Amman (2007 – 2009); the Secretariat of State at the Vatican – Section for the Holy See’s Relations with States (2009-2017) and in the Apostolic Nunciature in Spain, Madrid (2017-2020).

On 1 February 2020, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso and raised him to the archiepiscopal dignity granting him the titular see of Lindisfarne. Subsequently, on 25 April 2020, he was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Niger. On 15 August 2020, he was ordained to the episcopate in St Colman’s Cathedral, Diocese of Cloyne, Ireland. Since September 2020 he has been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso and Niger with residence in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In May 2023, he was appointed Special Envoy of the Holy See to attend the presidential inauguration of H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Apart from his mother tongue English, he speaks Gaelic, French, Italian, Spanish and German.

Today being the 13th of July, 2024 makes it exactly one year that you were elected and sworn in as the Second Superior General of the Via Christi Society.

It is with joy and thanksgiving to God that we celebrate this day. We pray for God’s continuous direction as serve the Via Christi Society and the Church at large.

PRAYERS FOR OUR CARIBBEAN MISSIONARIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES.

The last few days have been filled with anxiety as we anticipated the threats of Hurricane Beryl and now the destruction left behind on the Islands where our missionaries serve.

We pray for restoration and the rebuilding of areas and communities destroyed by the hurricane in the home country of our Father Founder - St. Vincent and the Grenadines were Fr Victor Omenka, VC is a missionary. We pray for our missionaries also in St. Lucia (Fr. Kenneth Haakyav, Simon Nomsule, Charles Obioma), Trinidad and Tobago (Fr. Kizito Ameloko, Peter Aduaka) and their communities.

WE PRAY FOR OTHER ISLANDS WHO ARE STILL FACING THIS THREAT.

TWENTY HISTORIC AND GLORIOUS YEARS.

The 3rd of July is significant in the history of the Via Christi Society. On this day twenty years ago, beaming with smiles of fulfillment, the Father Founder Fr Angus George FRASER, CSSp watched his first set of priests ordained by Bishop Mathew Ishaya AUDU.

HAPPY 40TH PRIESTLY ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY TO A SPECIAL PRELATE.

Today, in Tudu Uku village in Nasarawa State, the Via Christi Society joined men and women of good will to celebrate the Archbishop of Jos Archdiocese and the Metropolitan of Jos Ecclesiastical Province - Archbishop Mathew Ishaya AUDU on the occasion of his fortieth anniversary of priesthood.

Archbishop Audu has a special place in the history of the Via Christi Society; Archbishop Audu ordained to the Transitional Diaconate the very first set of Via Christi seminarians in 2003 and ordained them to the Priesthood in 2004.

WE WISH THE GOOD ARCHBISHOP MANY MORE YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE IN GOD'S VINEYARD.

He died on 13th June, 2024 and the Funeral Mass took place today at St Agatha’s Parish, Wajir, Lobi-Kartyo, Ulan Ushongo LGA, Benue State. Most Rev Williams Avenya, Bishop of Gboko Diocese presided at the Mass.

CONGRATULATIONS PROF BLAISE GUNDU GBADEN, AMVC

Prof Blaise Gundu Gbaden, the National President of the Associate Members of the Via Christi Society, presented his inaugural lecture today. His lecture marked the 16th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Lafia. Very Rev Fr Dr Gabriel Abiem, VC represented the Superior General of the Via Christi Society at the event. Other Via Christi Priests like Very Rev Fr Melchizedek Akpan VC, Frs Ishima Peter VC, Samuel Enemari VC, Samuel Ekele VC and Rev Stephen Aondona VC were also there to celebrate with him.
