As an Autism teacher, let me say: Happy World Autism Acceptance Day!
Autism is a type of neurodiversity that needs to be celebrated, embraced, and supported like all neurodiversities! Use the rainbow or gold infinity sign to show your support for the Autistic community, and listen to the voices of the Autistic community for guidance and information (check out the )!
In honor of the day, we'd like to encourage you to do some critical research that allows you to truly listen to the voices of the Autistic community. Explore and learn about the perspectives of identity-first language, the meaning behind using the rainbow infinity sign (rather than 'light it up blue' or a puzzle piece), and amplify the voices, experiences, and stories of Autistics. Autism does not need a cure, or to change to "fit in" to the neurotypically-designed society we live in; instead, we need to be agents of change to expand the inclusivity and cultural competence of our world to celebrate all forms of neurodiversity!
Let's break down the first area of the : Collaboration. It's been one of the buzz-words in education for a while now, and for good reason! Whenever I think of 'collaboration', I think of what my old middle school teacher said - "think smarter, not harder". By working together with others, you have the chance to find a new way, a new idea, and a new perspective that might make your own practice easier, with less work!
Hey Special Educators! Did you know that CEC and the CEEDAR Center collaborated to make a set of guidelines for special educator excellence? They're called the High Leverage Practices, or , and we're going to share them with you here!
Hey Arizona Teachers! 👋 Join our account manager on a teacher-to-teacher Instagram live this afternoon, starting at 4:30pmMST. See you there!!

EastValleyCEC exists to support YOU, the teachers in Arizona! We get it - the world, education, and life in general is a bit out of control right now, and having one more thing to handle is just one thing too many. We've gone ahead and switched up our schedule - we're pushing back dates to next school year, or changing the plan completely - in order to give you the support and space we teachers need right now! Stay strong - we're here for you!

What else can we say besides !
Can we talk about positive & individualized behavior charts?
Maybe the special ed teacher nerd is strong today, AND I want to share this fantastic tool, the Behavior Rating Scales Report Card Maker. I love that you can choose from a pre-written bank of behavior goals, or you can write your own; you can customize it to be daily, daily by the time, by location; you can change the response type from Frowny/Smiley face scales to points systems, to a percentage of the time.
I love using daily behavior charts such as these because they are a great way to frame the specific positive expected behaviors for students - instead of "don't talk", we can make the target "Student uses a quiet voice, raises a hand, and waits to be called on before speaking." Phrasing like this reminds the student what they are expected to do, helping them stay on track!
Pair this Report Card Maker with a preference assessment, and you've got a great rewards system ready-made for classroom use. Click the link in our bio to check out this great tool!
Raise your hand if you struggle with self-care✋
As a 2nd year teacher myself, I struggle to justify taking the time for self-care. I even feel guilty sometimes, thinking I should be doing something more to get ready for school on Monday, something more for that meeting, something more. It can be really hard to practice self-care sometimes, especially when the stress is high, and the world may be adding on the pressure.
Taking care of yourself, first and foremost, is critical for your well-being. It can also be a really powerful thing for your students and coworkers to see. Giving yourself the breaks that you need, creating healthy boundaries with your job, and taking the time off - weekends or otherwise - that you truly need for yourself can help remind others that they need to take care of themselves, too. It isn't being selfish - it's an act of self-love.
