Just like all the movements in Black history that fought for equality and freedom, June 19,1865 must also be remembered as one of this country’s most important movements.
Now as a national holiday, Juneteenth serves as a moment of reflection on the emancipation of the last enslaved Black people in the United States and the role they played in one of the country’s earliest liberation movements.
The preliminary Emancipation Proclamation was signed on that proceeding September 22, 1862 and it declared slaves in “all rebellious states” to be free beginning on January 1, 1863.
However it took two additional years before word finally reached the West starting in Galveston, Texas.
Remember this day as a celebration of freedom, resiliency and faith.
Let us commemorate and reflect on the strength and power of those that we honor and remember Juneteenth, 2024.
