As we begin to prepare our hearts for Good Friday, let’s take a moment to reflect on what Jesus was doing today, Maundy Thursday. In Luke 22:39-46, Jesus is praying on the Mount of Olives, prior to His arrest. Luke mentions in verse 44 that Jesus is in agony. Jesus is earnestly struggling in this passage. As the human part of His spirit begins to realize the sacrifice He is going to make, He is in a figurative state of anguish. Not only that, but He is also leading, and being led—with great implication—the task that must be accomplished. His agony also has to do with His love for us! He knows this sacrifice will be the appeasement of His Father’s justice for our sin, and drawing His children back to Him. Jesus also likely has prior knowledge of the separation He is going to experience right before His death; the separation that all mankind feels absent from the Father.
See you all soon for our Palm Sunday service this morning. Our word for this morning comes from John 12:23. But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified”.
