April is ROSECEA Awareness Month!
Frequent redness in the center of the face, focused-in on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin area, sensitivity, an irritated ruddy appearance are usual symptoms of rosacea.
Rosacea is an extremely complex skin disease that is continuously being researched by scientists, who still have not been able to indefinitely claim what in fact causes rosacea.
Millions of people in the United States suffer from this skin disease, being diligent in keeping up with newest research so we can at least have a better understanding about the primary triggers and how to help decrease and lessen their symptoms.
Rosacea can only be diagnosed by a doctor, and unfortunately there is no cure for it, but the good news is that when its detected early, it is easier to moderate symptoms before any escalation and with consist care rosacea can successfully be managed.
The most common we see and treat are vascular and inflammatory rosacea, which are the main ones that cause the redness and the bumps.
Vascular rosacea is believed to be the result of over-dilated capillaries that are transparent through the skin causing the visible red and web-like appearance.
Inflammatory rosacea also known as acne rosacea is a combination of redness, irritation, sensitivity and bumps combined with the underlying core issue of a disorder of the sebaceous glands or the oil glands. The problem is there is oil trapped in the glands which triggers an immune response, causing inflammation and bumps, known as papules or even pustules, filled with pus.
Rosacea skin is typically more sensitive and reactive which is one of the reasons it tends to appear flush and bumpy, especially when triggered by culprits like stress, diet, UV exposure, hormones or environmental changes to mention a few. Rosacea does not have to be treated with prescription drugs. Technology and science has offered a host of ways to treat and control this condition.
