Today marks Hannah's last day on rotation with us! She has been such a great addition to our team over the last 5 weeks. We have really enjoyed teaching her about our cost plus model and wish her the best! She always made sure we had amazing music playing in our pharmacy since Tommy only put on Calvin Harris. She loved her time here and her favorite part was going into the South Hills area to market our pharmacy to various physician offices. We will miss our favorite student!

Today Akshaya wraps up her APPE rotation with us. Over the past few weeks, we tried our best to instill our PBM distaste in her by showcasing the harsh realities of our failed healthcare insurance system. Even so, she still loved her time here - her favorite part was ringing patients out and getting to know them. She even enrolled more new patients than Tommy! We will miss her!

How it Works

The quickest explanation is a comparison to Aldi®️. By primarily carrying generics (although we can order anything/everything next day), cutting out middleman insurance companies, opening only during peak hours, keeping extra packaging to a minimum, and operating out of a small blueprint, we are able to offer the same medications at much lower prices to everyone - uninsured, underinsured, and insured (without even needing to bill insurance!).

We also specialize in medication education and making sure you are on the safest, most effective, and cost-effective medication possible. Regardless of whether you use Blueberry Pharmacy to get your medications, we’re here to assist with your medication-related questions - just schedule a consultation.

Membership Model

So what makes Blueberry Pharmacy so distinct from every other pharmacy? We do not take insurance.

The typical reactions are: Why not? How do you get patients? But I have insurance...

The quick answer is: you can often pay the same price, or less (on generics), at Blueberry Pharmacy as you would with insurance.

Using insurance is not always beneficial. I once heard a physician describe it best when comparing health insurance to car insurance: If you have a minor incident (e.g. cracked window), you are often best to not submit for reimbursement as your premium may go up or you’ll pay anyhow with a deductible. The same is true for prescriptions, in which deductibles, donut holes, and fixed copays often make something cost more than just paying outright.

And it makes sense. The chart below shows all the different people involved with a transaction through insurance. Each takes their cut. Blueberry Pharmacy is different: We charge a patient what it costs us to order the drug + a dispensing fee.

Can’t all pharmacies offer cash prices you might ask? Yes, all pharmacies do. However, reimbursement from insurance has been falling over the past decade to where traditional pharmacies lose money on 30-40% of the prescriptions they fill. In response, their cash prices have risen to balance out losses on the insurance side. Additionally, Blueberry Pharmacy is offering a membership program to help patients who take multiple medications save even more money. The pricing model is the same, they just pay a much lower dispensing fee on each medication.

In trying to come up with the quickest and easiest explanation for what Blueberry Pharmacy is and how it compares to other pharmacies, I’ve settled on comparing it to Aldi. We offer the same generic medications as everyone else, but since we don’t have all the overhead, loss-leaders, and brand name medications as everyone else, our prices are much lower. No quarter needed though :-)

The last question is usually, “so if I am on a brand name medication that’s expensive, then I won’t benefit?” No. Maybe there is a generic in the same class of medications that you’ve never tried. Maybe there is a coupon out there or a patient assistance program that you would qualify for. Maybe there is a combination tablet (2 meds in 1 tablet) available that would cut out one copay and reduce the number of pills you would have to take. Or some other option that talking with a pharmacist might uncover. That’s why we will be offering a Blueberry Consult.
