Meet Cari, Head Baker at the Commonplace Coffee Bakery👋

Cari is one of the founding members of our bakery and has been professionally baking for 14 years, with 50+ years of home baking experience. She adds, "In some ways, baking found me. It’s part of my DNA. I have baked since childhood with my mother and grandmother."👩🍳

Her favorite summer bev is an iced Americano or iced green tea, and her favorite baked good is a chocolate chip cookie🍪

How did Cari discover Commonplace Coffee? She shares, "My family discovered Commonplace when it first opened, and we have been almost daily customers since. Imagine how many drinks we've had over the last 21 years!"

Cari loves working with Commonplace Coffee because of "our commitment to craft & care and our community-centered philosophy." She also loves getting to wake up early and see the beautiful sunrises each morning as she bakes🥹

It's been almost a year since we debuted the final cut of Craft and Care: The Story of Commonplace Coffee.

The amazing team at Headspace Media helped us create this short film to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

Now in our 21st year of operation, we're proud to share that the film has won two silver ADDY awards in the "Pittsburgh Foodie" and "Film, Video and Sound" categories, presented by the Pittsburgh American Advertising Federation AND a bronze Telly award in the "General-Food & Beverage" category.

Meet Erez, a barista at Commonplace Coffee Mexican War Streets👋

Erez has 7️⃣ years of coffee experience, and their favorite bev is "a lil' cup of drip on work days, and on days off, an oat cappuccino, baby!"🤠

How did Erez discover Commonplace Coffee? They share, "When I moved to the North Side, I would bike or walk to the cafe almost everyday." Erez says, when chatting with then Shop Manager Frank, "In the most casual manner, he asked if I wanted to work here. I said, 'yessir,' and here we are, 3 years later."🥺

They add, "This is such a warm space that is filled with community, behind and beyond the bar."🫶 And what about when Erez isn't at work? They enjoy biking around the city with friends, reading in the garden with a matcha, working on tattoo designs, and running around the park with their pup, Bea✨

Head Roaster Vikki is excited to introduce our newest ROASTER'S CHOICE release: Yuki Minami Pineapple✨

We have been purchasing a natural process Brazilian coffee from Yuki Minami since 2021, which quickly became a favorite of guests and staff alike. We just brought it back into our lineup as a mainstay coffee, but we’re not stopping there!

After years of playing around with experimental processing, Yuki received consultation from Giselle Abreu, who holds a Ph.D. in post-harvest processing. Dr. Abreu’s consultation informed this SECOND release from Yuki’s farm, which features something seldom seen in our lineup: co-fermentation.

In this process, coffee ferments in tanks with fruit, fruit juice, or a sweetener, such as molasses. Yuki's coffee went through a two-stage fermentation. First, the coffee and coffee cherries were fermented for two days. Then, a slurry of locally-grown Brazilian pineapple was added to the tank.

We selected this coffee to showcase the diversity of Yuki's work. We encourage you to grab a bag of Yuki Minami Pineapple AND the classic Yuki Minami and taste them side-by-side to enjoy the breadth and excellence of her offerings.

👋Meet Cory, Fulfillment Manager at Commonplace Coffee HQ!

Cory has 1️⃣ year of experience in the coffee industry, and his favorite bev is a pour over. He adds, "When I'm feeling sweet, I like a good mocha latte!"🍩

Though you probably won't see Cory at our cafes, his behind-the-scenes work makes the Commonplace Coffee world go 'round. Cory's job includes managing accounts for our cafes and wholesale clients, overseeing the fulfillment process, bagging coffee, coordinating our fulfillment & delivery team, and more💥

Cory Hess first discovered Commonplace Coffee via his partner Bel (who we've also featured!) He adds, "Bel would take me to the Campus Edge shop when I visited them at IUP, and then they worked at the Garfield shop before I eventually started at HQ!"🙌

What does Cory enjoy about the job? He shares, "My favorite thing about working here is how community mixes with high quality coffee. It makes specialty coffee feel less snobby and more like a welcoming space for anyone who's interested!"🥹

When he's not at work, Cory describes himself as an "indoor/outdoor cat."🐈 He takes long walks around Pittsburgh, rides his bike, plays video games, jams on the guitar and piano, and works on LEGO sets🎮✨
