Beate Kuhn: Turn A Playlist 09/09/2024

Music was a constant companion for artist Beate Kuhn, whose first solo museum exhibition in the United States, Beate Kuhn: Turn, is on view now!

While visiting Kuhn’s home and studio in Düdelsheim, our curators logged Kuhn’s collection of CDs and created a playlist so that you can hear what inspired Kuhn.

Kuhn embraced avant-garde classical music, often listening while she worked in the studio. She gravitated toward the atonal compositions of Luigi Nono; the musique concrète of Helmut Lachenmann; the electronic “micropolyphony” of György Ligeti; and the unusual instrumentation and spiritualism of Sofia Gubaidulina.

Words like "Moon," "Grandmother," "Land," and "River" are welded onto artist Marie Watt’s sculptures, but have you wondered where the words originated?

While preparing to create these sculptures, commissioned for the exhibition Marie Watt: LAND STITCHES WATER SKY, Watt held workshops with museum educators and the Pittsburgh Poetry Collective to develop a word bank.

A fifth-grade class from Wi******er Thurston School was among those who contributed their handwriting featured on Watt’s steel sculptures. Before the exhibition opened, the students joined Watt for a private viewing experience in our galleries, where they could see the work which they helped create.

Experience Marie Watt: LAND STITCHES WATER SKY during your next visit to the museum. But hurry, the final day to catch this exhibition is Sunday, September 22.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Plan your visit online at https://carnegieart.org

What do shock waves look like?

While in residence at an explosives range in Socorro, New Mexico, artist Lucy Raven captured the trajectory of shock waves using a variety of techniques, including cameras able to record at 20,000 to 70,000 frames per second.

The resulting artwork, Demolition of a Wall (Album 2)—now on view in Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape—invokes a visual spectacle of air, pressure, force, extreme sp*ed, and legacies of nuclear radiation and fallout that continue the artist’s research into the relationships between violence, abstraction, and materiality.

Be sure to experience Raven’s immersive work, and the rest of Widening the Lens during your next visit to the museum. Learn more at: https://carnegieart.org/exhibition/wtl/
