The post-show discussions for Khūrākī are promising to be out-of-this-world, thanks to our incredible groups of panelists. For the discussion Saturday, April 13th, we'll be focusing on "What's Changed in Afghanistan" since the show was written in 2019. Because as you may know, those changes have been stark, sweeping and affect the lives of every person in, and working with, the Afghan community.
On Saturday, you'll hear about the 2021 US pullout from Afghanistan from the perspective of someone who was at the Kabul airport at the time. You'll hear about the changing status of women in Afghanistan, and how needs are different for Afghans arriving to Pittsburgh after 2021 vs. those who are represented in the show. And you'll discover ways that you can help.
Panelists include Elizabeth Ringler-Jayanthan, Refugee & Immigrant Services Therapist, Center for Afghan Resilience at Bethany Christian Services; Addi Fergyson, Program Coordinator of the Family Strengthening Program at Bethany; Sohrab Bakhshi, entrepreneur, Afghan immigrant; and Mohammad Nazeer Mayar, interpreter at Bethany, Pitt law school graduate and Afghan immigrant.
Bring your questions. We want to hear from you.
Visit realtimeinterventions.org for tix, which include the show, an Afghan tasting menu, live music, and the talkback! TICKETS ARE FREE for all members of the Afghan community; write to [email protected].
We've all heard of Afghanistan on the news. But how much do you really know about the culture, cuisine, and people of this ancient country on the Silk Road?
This April 12-14, at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts Peter J. Kountz Theater, learn about your Afghan neighbors at RealTime Arts' unique culinary-theatrical experience Khūrākī.
The show was created by RealTime Arts with a group of female Afghan refugees who received culinary and entrepreneurial training as part of the theater project. They went on to start the first Afghan food business in Pittsburgh, Zafaron Afghan Cuisine, and will be cooking delicious Afghan dishes for you as part of the show.
The performance features stories from the women themselves, performed by the Pittsburgh actors they chose to represent them. Look beyond the news cycle to discover the beauty of the land, the culture and the people of Afghanistan-- as shared by Pittsburgh's Afghans themselves.

Sonia De Los Santos Performance Postponed
Please read the message below from Sonia:
"We are so sorry to inform you that we won't be able to perform in Pittsburgh this weekend. There was a breakthrough COVID-19 case post-vaccination in our circle, and our priority is to keep everybody safe and healthy around us. We were looking forward to our time there, but this is a good reminder to continue to stay vigilant while we take care of our families. We will look for a new date in the coming months to share our music with you. Thank you for understanding."
-Sonia
We hope to rebook Sonia as part of the 2021-2022 Hillman Performing Arts Series; however, at this time a show date is not yet determined. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected].
