The Purple Heart was first created on August 7, 1782 by the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, General George Washington. Then known as the Badge of Military Merit, it was awarded to 3 Revolutionary soldiers in 1783. After the end of the American War of Independence, no medals were awarded until 1932, when the medal was revived on the bicentennial anniversary of George Washington's birth. At current estimates about 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded since then. Today, in addition to being awarded to those who fight wars overseas, the Purple Heart is also given to military personnel who display bravery and valor as prisoners of war and while fighting certain types of domestic terrorists.

Solder On Chaplain, Richard Sabellico reminds us that stories are more than mere entertainment; they have the power to inspire us and illuminate our purpose: “Let us turn inward and examine the stories we tell ourselves. Are they stories of hope and resilience? Or are they tales of limitation and fear? Let’s strive to make our chapter one filled with love, purpose, and courage.”

ARPA funding allocated for veteran homelessness programs 07/12/2024

“Soldier On is honored to be a recipient of the HOPE grant created by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services(EOVS),” said Bruce Buckley, CEO for Soldier On. “Governor Maura Healey and Secretary of Veterans' Services Jon Santiago are effectively processing the resources that are necessary to end veteran homelessness in the Commonwealth. Soldier On is acutely aware that this funding is the result of listening to the at-risk veterans and delivering services that meet their needs. This program provides support where it is critically needed to help change how the story ends for one veteran at a time.”

ARPA funding allocated for veteran homelessness programs Soldier On Inc., which provides housing and social services for veterans in western Massachusetts, will receive $1-million.
