P L A Y is the 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 activity of children.
In our therapy sessions with Autistic kids, child-led, adult-guided play is where the magic happens.
Kids can sense when the adult is choosing power and control over compassion and connection.
Broccoli = work
Chocolate = play that is based on interest and joy
Chocolate-covered broccoli 🥦 = adult directed work disguised with toys 🥸
When we write our therapy goals to address regulation, connection, communication, autonomy, and self-advocacy then we can address those skills during ANY activity that is of interest to the Autistic child.
There is no need to write goals about getting the child to play in a certain way. Play is the medium through which we connect and engage. And play is the spontaneous activity of children. 🙌🏼

Rhythm and timing in autism: learning to dance In recent years, a significant body of research has focused on challenges to neural connectivity as a key to understanding autism. In contrast to attempts to identify a single static, primarily brain-based deficit, children and adults diagnosed with autism ...

Autism is primarily defined with social and communication deficits; however, current literature suggests that movement differences play a part in autism and that this component warrants further investigation. If clinical treatment of autism addressed motor deficits, appropriate therapeutic goals to impact functional change might include motor coordination, motor planning, and functional motor skill development. Rhythmic auditory cueing could be an appropriate technique to provide a predictable structure to stabilize variability in the movement pattern and facilitate a motor plan. Given the current evidence, this is an area where further research is required to better understand the potential impact of rhythm on movement in persons with ASD.
Rhythm, movement, and autism: using rhythmic rehabilitation research as a model for autism Recently, there has been increased focus on movement and sensory abnormalities in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This has come from research demonstrating cortical and cerebellar differences in autism, with suggestion of early cerebellar dysfunction. ...

“Taken together, therapies that incorporate elements of music making (e.g., AMMT) may offer a viable approach to facilitate social skills and communication – including expressive language – in otherwise nonverbal individuals with autism. More importantly, as evidenced by the literature on training-induced plasticity, an intensive course of music-based or auditory-motor intervention, such as AMMT, may create a situation in which long-range connections between auditory and motor regions could be particularly engaged and possibly strengthened, such as those observed following intensive music training in children [47], or melodic intonation therapy in aphasic patients “
Neural pathways for language in autism: the potential for music-based treatments Language deficits represent the core diagnostic characteristics of autism, and some of these individuals never develop functional speech. The language deficits in autism may be due to structural and functional abnormalities in certain language regions ...

Very excited about this certification
I don’t know what parent/guardian needs to hear this, but in 4th grade I took ~The Test~ to see if I could join the accelerated classes (aka “the smart kid classes”).
I failed.
One of the questions I missed -> I didn’t know the difference between a microscope and a telescope.
I remember crying in that test room because I felt so nervous and embarrassed.
I never did test into the smart kid classes. I had a teacher even suggest I wouldn’t be a good fit for Honors Science in high school.
Anyway, I ended up earning a Masters of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.
No single test defines your child. I kept trying and I kept pushing because I had parents who believed in me. They weren’t scientists or engineers themselves but they believed I could do whatever I set my mind to.
Love your child - make them know that YOU believe they are smart and capable (even when a silly test suggests otherwise). Everything else will fall into place. ❤️
