Varicose Veins & Spider Veins affect tens of millions of women and men in America. For many, this unsightly disorder is a source of embarrassment, preventing them from wearing shorts or skirts that make the veins visible. As warm weather approaches, some people elect to have cosmetic treatment of their veins. Why do visible veins recur, even after treatment? Many times, it’s not the treated veins that become visible again, rather it’s new veins in the same network that become visible. This cycle of treatment and recurrence can continue indefinitely as long as the problem veins are only treated cosmetically and the root problems are never addressed.

Dr. Lee, the Medical Director at Bay Vein Associates, often describes problem veins like leaky pipes in the basement of a house. Treating the vein cosmetically is like mopping up the puddles of water caused by leaking pipes. The puddles can be mopped up every day, but they will always return unless the source of the problem- the leaky pipes- are fixed first. That’s what we aim to do at Bay Vein Associates- find and fix the source of the problem, then go back and mop up any remaining cosmetic issues.

Usually, the problem behind Varicose Veins & Spider Veins is an underlying condition called Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). In patients with CVI, valves in the veins that are just under the skin fail, resulting poor blood circulation. Since blood can’t circulate back to the heart, it pools in the legs, increasing pressure in the entire network of veins. This pressure causes veins to become discolored and bulgy, and it often gets worse with time. Other more symptoms of CVI that may arise with time include:

-Leg swelling, especially in the calves or ankles
-Muscle pain or cramping
-Leg aches or a feeling of heaviness
-Itching veins or skin

Lee had been suffering from pain and discomfort when walking and running for years. As a lifelong runner, he could not do one of the things that he loved the most. His focus is on educating patients on their diagnosis and treatment options.

Cristy is our Clinic Coordinator. She is usually a patient's first point of contact; she handles appointments, authorizations, and generally keeps our clinic operating and our patients happy.

Arthur and Miriam are our ultrasound technologists. Since vein disease can not be seen with the naked eye, we rely on ultrasound imaging to both diagnose and treat patients. Arthur and Miriam combine for over 50 years of experience with ultrasounds, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness.
