Super exciting research showing that to demonstrate benefits in the brain, an adjustment has to be done to a subluxation in the spine. While this sounds pretty basic for anyone remotely familiar with chiropractic care, it is foundational for establishing a scientific record for the actual mechanism of how adjustments work.
Turns out you only get changes in prefrontal cortex sensorimotor integration if you apply your HVLA thrust at a subluxated segment! 🧠
We have had another study published!!! What a great way to start 2024!! 🎊
Our study is called ‘A randomized controlled trial comparing different sites of high-velocity low amplitude thrust on sensorimotor integration parameters’. It’s just been accepted for publication in Scientific Reports.
The study looked at whether it matters where we apply the HVLA thrust when measuring prefrontal cortex processing changes. And it turns out it does! We only got the brain changes when the chiropractors applied the thrust at a subluxated segment. No brain changes occurred when a thrust was applied to a healthy segment. It’s logical of course, but still needs to be investigated.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes coming 🍁🍂 -
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes coming 🍁🍂 One thing the past year has shown me vividly is that things can change in an instant in ways you never dreamed of. Sometimes the changes are painful and other times they can be great. I'm reminded of the wisdom of the ancient philosopher Ferris Bueller...

Fasting has many benefits when done correctly, and it’s not that hard to do correctly! Let us know if you’re interested in learning more about how fasting can help you get to your health goals.
There are many benefits of fasting.
✅Fasting can expedite gut healing, hormonal rebalancing and weight loss.
⠀
💫Like Carnivore, fasting reduces inflammation and also boosts the metabolism. It also resets the immune system, provides mental clarity, decreases insulin, balances blood sugar and increases ketones.⠀
🐄These are all benefits of a Carnivore diet but fasting shows these benefits more expeditiously.
🏋🏻♀️There are other benefits of fasting that are more pronounced. Fasting increases the human growth hormone. While you’re fasting, your body produces human growth hormone (HGH) that can help you build muscle and rebuild bone mass.
Fasting promotes the preservation of muscle mass, to help ensure human survival. (Hence why keto is muscle sparing). A study from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that levels of growth hormone increased four-fold after just two days of fasting.⠀
Fasting also helps with Autophagy. Here’s a brief summary:⠀
🧬Autophagy is the cleaning up of old broken-down cells. Fasting promotes autophagy “self-eating”, the cellular self-cleansing process that breaks down and recycles damaged molecules and cellular organelles. There is a similar process called apoptosis also known as programmed cell death. Cells, after a certain number of divisions, are programmed to die. This process is essential for good health.⠀
⠀
🧹Unlike apoptosis where the entire cell is cleaned up, autophagy cleans up portions of cells and new ones are rebuilt to replace it. So old cell membranes, organelles and other cellular debris can be removed.⠀
❓How long do you have to fast for autophagy?⠀
⠀
📖 Studies suggest that fasts between 24–72 hours probably have the strongest effects. Carnivores (Keto), will likely need to fast less and for shorter periods to induce autophagy. Exercise and restorative sleep can also support autophagy.

Hot Off the Press - Ketone Bodies Attenuate Wasting in Models of Atrophy
The Dominic D'Agostino lab has done it again with their latest publication on ketone bodies and muscle wasting, led by Dr. Andrew Paul Koutnik, PhD.
This paper encompasses over 5-years worth of research and discusses the impact of ketone bodies on atrophy-based diseases with additional insights on exogenous ketones and ketone-based metabolism/signalling. This research demonstrated the ability of ketones to preserve muscle in catabolic environments, in both models of cancer cachexia and inflammation-driven muscle wasting. There is so much to unpack from this paper, but we will try our best to keep it brief.
Cachexia is a devastating side effect of advanced cancer, characterized by muscle wasting. Sadly, among cancer-related deaths, cachexia is responsible for ~20%, and there are currently no effective treatment options available. This is partly due to the fact that there is no model system that accurately resembles the complexity of the disease, making it difficult to study. Koutnik’s team aimed to help solve this problem, along with testing the effects of novel metabolic-based ketogenic therapies.
💥The first major finding in this paper was the discovery of a new, reliable mouse model of cancer cachexia, filling the major gaps in the current model systems.
💥The second major finding was that the exogenous administration of ketone bodies prevented muscle wasting in this model of cancer cachexia, while also providing an anti-tumor effect.
💥The third major finding was that ketones also prevented muscle wasting in a cancer-independent model of wasting, in particular infection/sepsis (inflammation) induced muscle wasting.
This is a major first step in the right direction for finding safe, well-tolerated, and effective therapies for cancer cachexia and other muscle wasting conditions alike. In addition to highlighting a new potential role for exogenous ketones in catabolic environments.
Here is a beautiful example of how regular Chiropratic care can benefit someone with an active lifestyle!
