Save Our Pomona Public Library / Advocacy
SOPPL/Advocacy is an independent, volunteer, 501-C4 organization that engages in political advocacy for the Pomona Public Library.
Pomona has shown its compassion in the election. Pomonans, caring for children and youth have overwhelmingly voted for measure Y, which will expend funding for more youth services. While this is a good thing, we at SOPPL are still concerned about the consequences of taking up to 10% of current funding for this measure’s implementation. We were concerned over a measure which ends up pitting youth funding against public safety, infrastructure improvement/maintenance, and services such as the library and parks which benefit all the citizens.
Moving forward, SOPPL will be watching the budgeting process closely to ensure that the progress made in the library over the past decade is not eroded. We still don’t know where cuts will need to be made but we can make some guesses. We implore the council to carefully study all funding to ensure that cuts are not made to critical items.
In addition to looking after the library, we will be carefully monitoring the situation on the national level. Trump has expressed a plan for massive rounding up and deportation of undocumented individuals. We need to see how this will impact our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. They have also expressed a desire to turn back policies protecting our LGBTQ friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers..
I personally congratulate presumptive winning council candidates Elizabeth Ontiveros-Cole, Lorraine Canales, and Debra Martin. You will have a tough task ahead of you. Also congresswoman Norma Torres, Assemblymember Michelle Rodriguez, PUSD trustees Arturo Jimenez and Tamara Gonzalez, Three Valleys Water District member Jorge Marquez, as well as PUSD on measure UU.
I also wish to congratulate Guillermo Gonzalez and John Nolte on running very good campaigns while falling short, I hope they both continue to contribute to the dialogue in our city.
I look forward to working with everyone in the community as we navigate uncharted waters in a very changed environment.
