“Unless we understand the perpetrators of violent crime, we will not understand their motives and the symptoms of why they have so much rage, and unless we treat that rage, then we will continue to be immersed in this cycle of violence in America.” - CPP Professor Renford Reese

Political science Professor Renford Reese recently published “Violence in America: From a ‘Criminal’s’ Perspective,” a book that delves into the topic through interviews and personal anecdotes from individuals who have been incarcerated.

In his book, he explains the double standard in how laws are applied, where marginalized groups are discriminatorily prosecuted compared to privileged groups engaging in the same behavior. He urges Americans to rethink how they view incarcerated individuals and acknowledge the inconsistencies in the legal system.

In 2015, Reese cofounded the California State University (CSU) Project Rebound Consortium, which has since expanded to 19 of the 23 CSU campuses and helped over 1,000 formerly incarcerated individuals graduate.

Our very own Isabel Gutierrez will be speaking at the California State University Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium on Oct 30.

Gutierrez ('19, mechanical engineering) is the founder and CEO of Vistendo, a startup that aims to create accessible technology for the early detection of health issues for athletes and soldiers. Her company was recently awarded $1.5 million from the U.S Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Beyond running her business, Gutierrez remains connected to CPP as an industry mentor and sets up research projects with students on campus.

CPP will join the world's largest earthquake drill tomorrow Oct. 17 during the . Here's what you need to know:

🔹10:17am: CPP's Safety Alert System will send out a mass reminder of the drill via email, phone and text message to all students, faculty and staff. Be ready to DROP, LOCK, COVER, and HOLD ON.
🔹11:45am: CPP will send out mass messaging prompting the start of an earthquake evacuation drill.
🔹12:00pm: CPP will send out mass messaging indicating an “all-clear” to conclude the evacuation drill. Normal activities can resume at that time.

Whether he was working, playing or learning, these are just a few of the places Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering student Zion Mun built his community at CPP.

Like plenty of CPP students, Mun is a commuter. Joining clubs, working on-campus jobs, visiting resource centers or just hanging out, the first-generation college student has spent ample time on campus building a network of support.

Now he's just a few months away from launching into a career he hopes will land him at a social platform company like Meta, Facebook or Google.

CPP anthropology students are getting their hands dirty — in a whole new way!🧤🗑️♻️

As part of Anthropology 4300, students are sifting through campus trash provided by Facilities Planning & Management to learn about modern “artifacts” like food wrappers and coffee cups. The collected trash is washed, given identification numbers, and cataloged to compare what is thrown away in the coming years. This hands-on project gives students real-world experience in archaeological methods, but with a contemporary twist.

“Essentially, a lot of archaeology is looking at people’s trash, it’s just old people’s trash. This is looking at current people’s trash.” - Jesse Richert, second-year anthropology major 💬

The first Sunday Horse Show of the semester welcomed the community to CPP - including plenty of future Broncos! 🐎

Continuing the tradition of monthly horse shows that began in 1926, October's was a special edition in honor of hosted by campus partners Project Caminos and the César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education, among others.

The W. K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center's next shows will be held November 3 and December 1.
