The next breast you save can be your own! This is your reminder to do your monthly 🙌
Use this step-by-step guide, courtesy of , to check your breasts. Tag your friends so they can check themselves too, and be sure to report any changes to your doctor.
🔺If you notice any changes in your breasts, call your medical provider and schedule an appointment!
🔺If you don’t have insurance, and need a mammogram, visit: https://www.baptistjax.com/.../bre.../pink-ribbon-mammograms
The term “previvor,” according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), refers to individuals who have not been diagnosed with cancer and have a high risk of developing the disease due to genetic predisposition. These individuals often carry a hereditary mutation - such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, CDH1, PTEN, and TP53 to name a few - that significantly increases their susceptibility to certain cancers.
Are you aware of your risk for breast cancer? Do you have a hereditary gene mutation that puts you or your family members at higher risk for breast and other cancers? Talk with your medical provider about a generic risk assessment. It could help you manage your cancer risk and make decisions about personalized screening and prevention.
Myth: Radiation exposure during a mammogram can cause breast cancer.
Fact: Mammograms require a very small dose of radiation - the equivalent to 6 months of background radiation exposure from daily living. The risk of harm from this amount of radiation exposure is low, and the benefits far outweigh the risk.
Screening mammograms are the international gold standard for detecting breast cancer at an early stage when it is the most treatable. Mammograms can usually find lumps 2 -3 years before you or your health care provider can feel them.
🔺Don’t have insurance? To find out how and where to get a free mammogram through Pink Ribbon Jax visit https://www.baptistjax.com/services/womens-health/breast-health/pink-ribbon-mammograms

A day in the life of Breast Cancer Warrior Maura Shuey
This week Pink Ribbon Jaxribbonjax asked me to share what a chemo infusion day looks like. (Pink Ribbon Jax is an incredible local all-volunteer nonprofit that raises funds for breast imaging, breast cancer research and patient services. PRJ has donated more than $3.5 million in the fight against breast cancer all locally in Jacksonville!)
I always try to start my infusion days with a long walk on the beach. I feel so thankful to live by the ocean. Walking daily has helped me immensely with chemo side effects. It grounds me and has been so good for my mental health.
Afterwards, I head to Mayo Clinic for my weekly chemotherapy infusions. I start with five pre medications to help reduce side effects, which make me a little groggy. The chemo regimen I’m currently on takes a few hours so I ice my hands and feet to reduce the risk of neuropathy. While the ice packs are uncomfortable, chemo induced neuropathy can be a life long issue. I also go to weekly acupuncture to help relieve chemo side effects and it’s been a huge help.
This is not the way I wanted to spend my summer, but I’m so thankful I caught my breast cancer early from a self breast exam. While yearly mammograms are so important, I had a clear mammogram late August and by January found a 2.5cm tumor doing a monthly self exam. Early detection saves lives so commit to a few minutes a month for your self checks!
I ask you to please share this with five woman in your life to help spread awareness and encourage self breast exams 💕
Wishing you a joy-filled 4th of July!

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves and their echoes to make computer images of the inside of the breast. It can show certain breast changes, like fluid-filled cysts, that can be harder to see on mammograms. It also can be used to get a better look at a suspicious area that was seen on a .
Ultrasound is not typically used as a routine screening test for , but can be especially helpful in women with dense breast tissue.
Widely available, ultrasound does not expose a person to radiation and also tends to cost less than other testing options.
Sending the happiest of birthday wishes to our incredible committee member Sarah Teagle 🎂 Your dedication to and is changing lives. May your day be as special as the positive impact you bring to our community.

A Stanford Medicine study of thousands of breast cancers has found that the gene sequences we inherit at conception are powerful predictors of the breast cancer type we may develop and how deadly it might be.
The finding challenges the belief that most cancers result from random mutations accumulated over a person's lifetime. Instead, it highlights the significance of inherited genes in influencing whether potential cancer cells are detected and eliminated by the immune system or evade detection and develop into cancer.

Myth-buster Monday:
Myth: Men don’t get breast cancer.
Fact: Men can get breast cancer.
In 2024, it is estimated that approximately 2,790 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and 530 will die from the disease.*
For men, the average lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 726* (up from the previous estimate of 1 in 833). But each man's risk might be higher or lower than this, based on his risk factors for breast cancer.
Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among White men than among White women. It is about 70 times less common among Black men than Black women.
The ratio of male-to-female breast cancer diagnosis is 1 man to every 120 women. While this percentage is small, men should check themselves periodically by doing a breast-self exam while in the shower and reporting any changes to their physicians. Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the ni**le and ar**la.

June is Men’s Health Month.
Encourage the men (and boys) in your life to take care of themselves - this includes performing monthly breast self exams because men get breast cancer, too!
Men’s health is not just a “man’s issue,” it’s a family issue. Urge all boys and men to stay healthy by eating right, exercising and getting regular medical checkups to prevent disease. We want them to live long and healthy lives.
Have you heard of the invisible load?
Generally applied to women in their home life, the invisible load is the mental and emotional tasks that are often overlooked and unacknowledged.
What about the invisible load of being a breast cancer survivor? There is SO much more to survivorship than meets the eye.
What added to your invisible load after treatment? Share your thoughts below.👇

Our Story
The Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, PO Box 483, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32004 operates as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization under the Baptist Health Foundation umbrella. Copyright © 2012 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic.
The Pink Ribbon Golf Classic is a non-profit event that was created to raise funds for local breast cancer research and related services at Baptist Medical Center Beaches and Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville. In our community alone, over 500 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. As volunteers working to support both Baptist Medical Center Beaches and Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville, our goal for 2012 is to raise $150,000. At this level we can help fund the salary of an additional research technician at the Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville and help with the installation of a new treatment room at Baptist Medical Center Beaches. In 2011 our contributions to Baptist Medical Center Beaches were used towards the establishment of the Support & Survivorship Program at Hill Breast Center. This program allows access to elevated support and rehabilitation services throughout cancer treatment and beyond. Contributions to Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville have supported the work of Edith A. Perez, M.D., E. Aubrey Thompson, Ph.D, and their team of breast cancer researchers. Over the past three years, they have developed an analytical infrastructure that has positioned Mayo Clinic as one of the world leaders in breast cancer genomics. Administrators at both Baptist Medical Center Beaches and Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville have emphasized the importance of this financial support, as this type of local commitment also helps them attract and retain medical talent. As an all-volunteer organization, we operate as a 501(c)(3) under the Baptist Health Foundation umbrella.
