Did you know that Publix was named after The Florida Theatre?!

The original owner of the Florida Theatre was Publix Theaters, the theatre construction and owning arm of Paramount Pictures. They also built such notable venues as the Paramount Theater in New York, the Tivoli in Chicago, the Olympia in Miami, and the Tampa Theater in Tampa.

According to Florida Memory, the theater chain was Publix Theatres Corporation, which operated at least 19 theaters in Florida during the mid-1920s and the early 1930s. Although the success of Publix Theatres in Florida was short-lived due to the stock market crash of 1929, Publix had a significant influence on Florida’s theater market because of the high standards the company established and the availability of their theaters.

Publix founder George Jenkins quotes, “The name ‘Publix’ was borrowed from a chain of theaters which was operating throughout Florida at the time. Most of them were closing up, and I liked the sound of the name so I just took it for my store.”

On this date in 1822, the City of Jacksonville was officially founded 🏙️ Looking pretty good for 201 years old.

BEFORE THE BRIDGE OF LIONS! In the late 1800s, this small bridge with a horse-drawn trolley connected historic St. Augustine, Florida to Anastasia Island, where the St. Augustine Lighthouse stands.

“The Bridge to Anastasia Island" or "South Beach railroad bridge" was built in 1895, and after a major renovation in 1904, the bridge could accommodate a trolley. The span contained no rise, and had a movable opening for ship traffic, and charged a toll for transit.

The Bridge of Lions was completed in 1927. It was rebuilt in 2010.

The bridge gets its name from a pair of marble Medici lion replicas that guard the bridge.
