How to Catch an Elf!

Writing Lesson: Story Match-UP "How to Catch an Elf" Greetings! What an amazing season this is. I don't know about you, but my students are always going on about their elves making mischief at night. They are always wanting to set traps for them. This is a great writing lesson that students love to participate in.

Looking for a neat way to introduce or review rules? Look no further! I cannot take credit for this genius idea. My team teacher came up with it. You place a piece of paper with a rule, procedure or expectation inside a balloon (I used question prompts) and then each child gets to pop his or her own balloon in any way they can and lead the discussion on that topic. It was a fun and unique way to jazz up the first week of school!

After I posted last week about Fisher & Frey’s ‘I Do, We Do, You Do’ Gradual Release of Responsibility instructional framework of structured learning, a teacher on Facebook shared this scaffolding graphic from Jess Surles. In her presentation (on You Tube) “when we are intensifying instruction, we aren’t necessarily changing the program, we are providing more scaffolding and more practice opportunities across the tiers.”

All you need is an introduction video, an article or 2 and some books to research the regions and you have yourself a mini-unit! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
