Kula Wellness specializes in nutrition, fitness, yoga and life coaching. Here we believe that every individual is unique with a different path to forge. We believe that nutrition, fitness and yoga are all integral components to one’s overall well being and happiness. Today we start a new chapter in our lives. Today we are officially the owner of Kula Wellness Hot Yoga Port Charlotte formerly known as Hot Yoga Port Charlotte. We are again blessed with the opportunity to bring what we are so passionate about to this new community in Florida. This time we are doing it as a family of 4.

Health and fitness around celebrations - I have a birthday coming up Monday, April 11th. A question that comes up a lot with my clients is what to do around celebrations and holidays in regards to nutrition. The # 1 answer is consistency throughout the rest of the week or month. You know the important dates ahead of time whether it’s a birthday, holiday or some other celebration. Mark them on your calendar and know that those are the 2-4 days of the month that you are going to let go or splurge. 

I like to follow the 80/20 rule when it comes to nutrition. As long as you are eating properly and nutritiously at least 80% of the time most people will still be able to reach their goals. 

It is important to enjoy yourself, have fun, and celebrate with others as well but be mindful that that one day or event doesn’t unravel into a whole week or month of nonsense eating.

Cross one ankle over the top of the other thigh. Try to keep the knee even with the ankle. The more you lean forward the more of a stretch you'll get.

Day 7 - Focus on how food makes you feel

Do you turn to food when you are happy?
Do you turn to food when you are sad?
Do you turn to food when your anxious?
Do you turn to food when you can't sleep?

We use food in so many different ways. It's used to celebrate and to mourn. We use it gathering with friends and family and we use it to entertain ourselves when we are alone.

The idea here is to be more aware of how you are feeling when you do eat. Not that you will never do these things again, but so that you know why you are eating. Then you can begin to recognize patterns and then you can choose to change them if you so see fit.

It is impossible to avoid all of these things, especially those so deeply built in to our society and culture. For example, today I will be going to a birthday party and I am sure I will eat things that are not ideal for my nutrition in celebration. I knew this would be the case so my nutrition has been pretty on point this week allowing for this treat today.

Day 6 - Portion awareness

The amount of food you are eating is very important.

Want to lose weight, eat less.

Want to gain weight, eat more.

This is very simplified advice and your situation may be more nuanced than this.

Easy ways to reduce the amount of calories you're eating:
1. Use a smaller plate.
2. Put half the amount on your plate you normally would and wait 15 minutes before getting a 2nd plate if you still want it.
3. Build a template of what your meal should be a stick to it. Make sure that you have protein and veggies at every meal.

Day 🖐 challenge - Chew thoroughly.

Digestion starts in the mouth, the more you chew, the easier it is for your stomach to turn your food into chyme: This is the semi liquid mix that passes through the rest of your digestive system.

Food that isn’t properly broken down into chyme can lead to indigestion and other potential gastrointestinal problems.

It has been shown that chewing your food more allows you to absorb more nutrients and is easier to digest.

Chew your food approximately 30 times or until it loses texture. This gets the digestion process properly started in your mouth and also gives your body time to prime the gut so that it is ready for the food once it gets there.

Chew your food thoroughly for at least 1 meal today and pay attention to how your body feels during and after.

Day 3️⃣ Minimize distractions while eating.

I am guilty of not always doing this one. I love watching a tv 📺 show or basketball 🏀 while I eat dinner but I don’t do it all the time.

Other options that I love just as much: Eating alone outside or eating with family.

Be grateful that you have the food to eat and treat it as an experience or opportunity to nourish your body.

Nothing is as important as that in the moment.

Set aside time to eat. ⏰🥗🥕🥑

Don’t allow it to be a sporadic last minute decision but plan ahead to ensure that you have a proper nutritious meal.

This does not have to be writing out every last thing you’ll eat this week but start by having a couple ‘go-to’ meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner that you keep stocked.

My go-to's:
Oatmeal, nuts🥜, fruit🍌🍓
Always have eggs in the fridge
Protein shake

Then, even when in a hurry, you have a quick meal you don’t have to think of.

Also, make sure you have time in your schedule to eat. I know too many people who go through a whole day busy at work and just ‘forget’ to eat🤦‍♂️. Don’t let this happen. Set an alarm 🚨on your phone, write meals into your schedule🗓, or find a buddy to hold you accountable and have lunch with them👥.
