HISTORY OF CLAIBORNE COUNTY FARM BUREAU
PORT GIBSON, MISSISSIPPI
Claiborne County Farm Bureau (AAL) was founded in 1934. The formation of this organization was to benefit and support the farmers and rural people of the county. By 1951 the organization was steadily increasing in numbers. In 1953 member totals had reached 280. At that time it was decided that Farm Bureau and the Farmer’s Co-op would become separate entities. The formation of the non-profit organization of Claiborne County Farm Bureau was formed. There were (4)four board members. By the late 1960’s the original board had grown to six (6) and there was also a full time insurance agency staff. In 1987 it was voted unanimously to build a new office to accomodate the member and Insurance services. Claiborne County Farm Bureau began with ten members. The membership has continued to grow and Claiborne County Farm Bureau strives to meet the members needs.

Claiborne County is still mostly a rural community that depends a lot on the farming industry. The major commodities grown in the county are cotton, soybeans, peanuts, cattle and timber. We have had the opportunity of working with and providing services to the employees of Alcorn State University and Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant.

Currently our board members are:

Mr. David Doyle, President
Mr. Lonnie Fortner, Vice-President
Mrs. Karen Fortner, Women Committee -Chair

Mrs. Mary Hudson
Claiborne County Farm Bureau Women Chair

Mrs. Hudson served as our Women Chair for several years. Having the pleasure to work with her for the past five years was an amazing experience. Mrs. Mary fought the good fight, she has finished the race, and she kept the faith. Her warm loving smile, compassion and strength for those who knew her will live on through her memories. Her husband (Powel) and son (James Jr. ) will miss her dearly. To know her was to love her. She is gone but will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers /monetary donations, the Hudson family is requesting all monetary donations be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Lonnie Fortner, one of Claiborne County’s Producer Advisory Council members was delighted to participate in today’s farm tour. In addition, he serves as a voting delegate for the BoWeevil Corporation. He gave 4-Hers a quick course about peanut farming which was full of interesting facts. Students learned the time length which peanuts are harvested, how peanuts are grown, and where his peanuts are transported. He was accompanied by his wife, Karen. She was extremely helpful as well.
We appreciate your participation in today’s Farm Tour!
