In the nineteen century, epidemics of diphtheria would usually carry a mortality rate between 30 to 50 percent. In the winter of 1860, during an epidemic of malignant diphtheria, Drs. Adolph Lippe, Constantine Hering, and Gustavus Reichhelm treated close to 300 cases with diphtheria without a single loss, while the fatality under allopathic treatment was more than 50 percent.
