We're having a get together Thursday, Aug. 15 at Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub on SW Second to celebrate our local history. "Everyone loves Ireland! Why is Irish culture so hot right now?" Irish Times Headline – 23 February 2024

The press is full of stories about how Ireland is super cool these days. And the cool thing is about to get hotter with the stories of Irish success in the Olympics and the athletes who made the Republic proud.

Many of us wonder when Ireland WASN’T cool in these parts?

In 1914 when Irishmen and Irishwomen in Greater Portland contributed to the construction of Hibernia Hall? In 1919 when an energized crowd of Irish Americans welcomed Eamon De Valera to Portland? On March 17, 1939 when the All Ireland Social Cub was founded with a Saint Patrick’s Day Dance? In 1951 when the Irish government created Comhaltas Ceoltiri Eireann to “promote Irish music, song. and dance around the world”? In 1997 when hundreds flocked to the same Hibernian Hall for a Potato Famine (An Gorta Mor) commemoration? In 2012 when Corrib Theater presented its first play in Portland? In 2013 when Portland dedicated the only Celtic Cross of its kind on the West Coast? In 2020 when Irish Network Portland was formed to provide the missing link between Irish culture and Irish commerce in Greater Portland?

Ireland’s been cool around here for well more than a century. Now, for the first time ever, leaders of Portland’s Irish social groups will come together to share their stories on Thursday August 15 at Kells Restaurant. Dinner at Six. (No host) Presentations at Seven. Prizes at Eight. Presented by the Portland Hibernian Society.

Scheduled to present: Sam Keator - the All-Ireland Cultural Society of Oregon. Denise McElwain – Irish Network Portland. Brian O’Hairt - Comhaltas Ceoltiri Eireann/Micheal O’Domnhail Branch. Holly Griffith – Corrib Theatre. Bill Gallagher – Portland Hibernian Society.

Such an achievement. Ireland, a country of about 7 million people, ranks 12th in the medal count at the Olympics. 12th among some of the most populated countries!!
