💕😻We love testimonials!

✨About our trauma informed care module from both the labor and birth birthworker training and the postpartum birthworker training: “Thank you so much for this module - despite having previous training experiences in trauma informed care, I found this to be the most thorough and compassionate education I have received. I really look forward to applying what I've learned here not only to my personal practice as a doula, but also to my daily life, and aiming to view those I encounter through a loving, empathetic, and trauma informed lens. Thank you!” - Olivia

🥰Today in our CBE training, I’m talking about trauma informed facilitation.

Trauma is complex.
People are complex.
Trauma informed care is complex.

But at the same time, the foundations of trauma informed care are simple.

🩵Safety. Connection. Relationship. Dignity.

➡️There is no trauma informed care without trust and relationship.
➡️Being trauma informed isn’t a way to be in one space and not in another. When you’re trauma informed, its a way of being in all aspects of our lives.

‼️And very importantly: We can transform our clients’ outcomes by modeling true informed consent and trauma informed care when we interact with them.

🩵Want to know more?
Our next CBE training dates are going to be released soon. Keep an eye out for more info!

ID: Pink background with an off white oval in the center that has a cartoon outline of yellow starbursts and red flowers. Inside the oval is a cornerstone hamsa logo and underneath that in black stylized lettering reads, “there is no trauma informed care without trust and relationship.”

👋🏻Hey fam,

❤️We’re conducting a Birthworker needs assessment survey to learn more about you and our community! Learning about where you’re at and what you might need to move forward in this chapter of your journey as a birthworker is important to us. We’d love to hear from you so that we can possibly rise to support those needs.

⭐️Fill out the survey by clicking the link in our bio and get entered into a drawing to win a free Cornerstone course of your choice.

We’ll be announcing the winner on August 1.

ID: Blue sky and clouds background with scattered pink hearts. In the center of the tile are bold periwinkle words that read, “Fill out our birthworker needs assessment survey and be entered to win a free course of your choice.” There is a Cornerstone hamsa logo in the upper right corner of the tile.

😮‍💨This might not be the take folks want to hear… but hear me out.

When you were new to this work, did you think there was a right way and a wrong way to give birth? Did you find yourself getting frustrated with the choices that your clients made for their babies and their bodies? Maybe you’ve been doing this work for a long time and you still find yourself holding onto binary right/wrong thinking about pregnancy, fertility, birth, and parenting.

☕️Here’s the tea, though.

It’s not up to us to determine what’s right for anyone but ourselves.
Our work is to support our clients. Period.

That said, the systems that our clients are forced to navigate are in need of complete and total dismantling and transformation.

Our work encompasses being fully present for and unequivocally supportive of our clients, while also working to transform the way that folks are cared for in all transitions of their lives.

So, I leave you with this end of week reflection:

Do you judge parents more than you judge systems?
What are you doing to transform reproductive healthcare as a birthworker?
What’s one thing you can do today to move away from binary thinking?

👇🏻Drop your answers in the comments.

❤️‍🔥Love, Nickie

ID: A Simpsons style cartoon drawing of a colorful window dressing pulled open with red flowers revealing black words. The words read, “The longer you practice birthwork I hope you become less judgmental of parents and more critical of systems.” There is a Cornerstone hamsa logo centered at the top of the image.

ID: Black background with white bold words that read the following:

Father’s day is really fu***ng complicated for me.

I’ve been no contact with my father for about two years now, whether he knows it or not. No contact probably doesn’t feel any different than the rest of my life has to him. He might not even notice

I feel sad for him and the wounded child that lives inside of him.
I feel angry at him for not taking accountability and trying to heal himself so that he could be a father to me and my sister.
It feels unfair that the damage he caused in my life continues to show up in destructive ways and that I have to be in therapy and do hard work to break his cycles that he passed down to me.
I feel proud of the parent I am, despite not having had his presence and guidance throughout my life.
I feel confused by how a person can have two children in the world and put no effort into being there for them, getting to know them, getting to know his grandchild.

So today, I thank my mom for being my only parent.
And I thank myself for being Mae’s parent and for reparenting myself.

And I thank the fathers that show up and support their partners and children. You give me hope.

Love to you all who are dealing with complicated feelings today. I see you. I am you.

Love, Nickie

It’s pretty impossible not to feel powerless in so many ways right now. ❤️‍🩹And I wanted to share a few things about how full spectrum birthwork brings me back to center and helps me to feel a connection to everyone and everything.❤️‍🩹

🫶🏻I truly believe that we are creating a new world together through full spectrum birthwork. We are actually working to create the world that we want to live in for ourselves, each other, our communities, and the generations to come.

🫶🏻We are weaving infinite webs of radical community care that touch every aspect of our lives. Our care for each other reverberates to care for all people. Our organizing and mobilizing makes a huge impact on this world and the people in it.

🫶🏻Full spectrum birthwork means leaving no one behind. It means including all people and all of life’s transitions. Full spectrum birthwork is intersectional, expansive, radical, revolutionary, and transformative.

🤲🏻 If any of this is speaking to you - if you’ve been feeling stuck or powerless, burnt out, or not knowing where to focus your energies in this work - or if you’re just ready to deepen your birthwork practice - I invite you to join us for the ☀️Summer cohort of our advanced full spectrum birthwork training! 💕Live zoom sessions Sundays from 12-2:30pm PST with replays available for folks who can’t make it.

🎒Btw, this is a very personal and vulnerable post, so if you’re only here for the birthwork content, you can scroll past.

🕺Fresh off the heels of the 🌑 eclipse comes the 🌕full moon in ♏️Scorpio ready to show you everything you don’t want to look at 🙈

😭Lessons I’m going through at the moment:
🙈When something isn’t working, you can’t ignore it forever.
💔Love means maybe having to let go even when every cell in your body screams and cries no.
🌹Decolonizing your thinking means decolonizing all aspects of your life, including your relationships.
My trauma really does impact all aspects of my life, even when I don’t realize it.
🙈I might not be as strong as I think I am.
❤️‍🩹My future happiness is worth the front loading of this pain that I’m going through right now. (Easier to type than to believe)
🤜🏻I can’t control everything.
🙈I have to have some faith that I’ll be ok no matter what. (Working on it)

👇🏻Comment below. What lessons have the full moon in scorpio forced you to learn?

ID: White background with six black rounded edge squares in the middle. In each square are black words that have a circle above them, some with checkmarks, others without. 💅🏼3 of the many hills I will die on: birthwork edition

1️⃣ If your practice isn't inclusive, it isn’t full spectrum.
Full spectrum birthwork includes EVERYONE and not everyone who gives birth is a woman. Don’t let anyone tell you that being inclusive in your practice is erasing women - honestly that’s ridiculous and I’m tired of hearing people saying that using gender neutral language (which is the bare minimum, btw) does anything to take away from another person’s experience.

2️⃣ Being a birthworker isn't girl boss s**t.
We’re not out here trying to build empires, we’re trying to get free together. Birthwork is messy, hard, and important work that we do in community. It’s not about me, it’s about us. Push back against the messaging that gaining power and influence equals “success”. We’re in this together and we take care of each other.

3️⃣ Staying for the whole 48 hour birth without a break isn't a flex.
Rise and grind isn’t something to strive for, it’s something we’ve been forced to participate in for survival. Take breaks, work in teams and collectives, and rest. Nobody benefits from your exhaustion - not you or your clients - and taking on those “marathon” births alone isn’t a sign of strength, it’s setting you up for illness, mental health issues, burnout, and an early exit from this work.

❤️‍🔥 ILY, Nickie.

😮‍💨Just a couple things about trauma informed care that I need to get off my chest…

Every single person you work with will have a history of trauma. It’s not a matter of “if”

I see folks talking about trauma informed care as this separate “tool” to use in the event of getting “that” client who needs it. Hate to break it to you, but we ALL need it. In every single aspect of our lives.

You can’t take one short trauma informed care training to check the box of what’s required of you in this work and move on. Being trauma informed is a way of being in every situation with everyone you interact with, including YOURSELF.

Trauma informed care is a framework. This means that it’s the bare minimum foundation that you use to build your practice upon.

Simply understanding what trauma is and being responsive to someone when they’re activated isn’t enough. It’s about how you move. How you speak. How you show up.

👇🏻Comment below with your definition of trauma informed care.

Leave a 🫰🏻in the comments if you want to learn more.
