After a brief hiatus (oh hiiiii surgery rotation- oof!) we are back with another mutual aid organization!
The Portland Mutual Aid Network was created in summer 2020 in response to the needs of those experiencing houselessness in downtown Portland. Throughout the June 2020 protests, the houseless were severely displaced due to the violence, police munitions, and tear gassing. Since then, volunteers have been making and distributing vegan food, supplies, and personal care products on a weekly basis in Old Town and Laurelhurst Park.
Through their motto “Engage - Listen- Respond” the Mutual Aid Network seeks to serve our neighbors through community response that brings about widespread transformation, as opposed to individual charity.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in being a Clinic Admin with BCCC!
Clinic Admins oversee day-of clinic operations helping coordinate clinic services, assist volunteers and patients, and problem solve. This position is essential to operations and Clinic Admins often identify new ways to improve service delivery and address patient needs.

This week we want to highlight some of the mutual aid groups in the Portland area, first up is The People’s Store!
Founded in May 2020 in response to Portland protests after George Floyd’s wrongful death, this group first aimed to provide protest-specific PPE but pivoted to focus in fulfilling a larger need. They provide free basic necessities including meals, clothing, and weather-proof upgrades to Portland’s houseless community. They have a frequently updated list of donation requests as well as two campaigns for tents and sleeping bags.

Meet another one of our medical student volunteers! Aleksandra is taking our new elective, which means she’ll be in clinic every Tuesday night for an entire term.
Name: Aleksandra Dagunts
Where did you grow up? Rockville, Maryland
Why medical school?
I’ve always been drawn to the way medicine can improve quality of life and empower patients to engage with whatever aspects of life they find meaningful. I want to play a role in creating spaces where people can access that more easily.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bridges? I love getting to spend more time with each patient than in most other clinical settings, and getting to learn from an inter professional team at various stages of training.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I enjoy bouldering both in climbing gyms and outdoors, crocheting, and trying new restaurants.
You’re already such an asset to our school and team, Aleksandra, thank you!
In our last post, we talked a little bit about the COVID-19 Vaccine clinics that Bridges and the AHSC put on together. They were a huge success!
Over 200 volunteers signed up to help through BCCC, covering 159 volunteer shifts. Together, they donated 745 hours of their time. 2,404 doses were administered and NO doses were wasted.
Thank you, AHSC, for helping us get one step closer to a healthy Oregon.
Welcome to part 2/3 on our community partner, the Asian Health & Service Center!
The AHSC has served the Portland metropolitan area since 1983. Currently, they offer weekly clubs and senior groups, support for caregivers, tax aid services, mental health clinics, Yu Miao Chinese Immersion Preschool, and more!
Bridges volunteers partnered with AHSC to deliver care packages to seniors during the early days of the COVID crisis, make masks, hold vaccine clinics, and so much more.
We are so grateful for the work of AHSC and their willingness to partner with us to help our treasured Portland AAPI population.
