A fine craft show highlighting Maine's incredibly diverse and impressive metalsmithing community

08/12/2024

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in and attended our first ever METAL fine craft show! We had a blast and it felt so special to get such a talented group of metalsmiths together in the same place for an afternoon. We braved the heat, made new friends, and shared tips and tricks of the trade. I've never experienced such a kind and supportive group of show attendees either. You all showed us so much love, my heart is full! Stay tuned for future iterations of METAL. It was so fun, I think we have to do it again...

Special thanks to our amazing hosts, , you are the best.
Thank you!!!

Meet Silas of !

Silas Wolff began his career studying the structure of metals, culminating in a doctorate in metallurgy. Inspired by his grandfather, who plied the blacksmithing trade for 25 years out of his forge in Southern Maine, Silas has since redirected and applied his passion for understanding the natural world to the more hands-on pursuits of tool-making and sculptural ironwork. With a style that is constantly evolving, his work focuses on achieving the best possible performance from the materials at hand, or, for more decorative purposes, minimizing waste through efficient forging techniques and by repurposing scrap. He will be showcasing mainly kitchen knives, as well as a range of other works representing a snapshot of his main interests.

Come see Silas' gorgeous work this Saturday, August 10th at METAL! 🔥

Meet Zoe of ! Zoe spent much of her life working with children, individuals with mental and physical disabilities, animals and in the fiber arts world teaching knitting, dyeing yarn and weaving. With a background in herbal medicine, she started a seed garlic farm and now, finally, has found a home as a metalsmith.

Zoe uses recycled precious metals and unique stones. Many of her hand fabricated pieces use interesting textures and play off the world around her. Her inspirations come from a lifetime of observation and travel.

Zoe grew up in Maine. She works out of her home studio in Bowdoinham and lives with her husband, dog and crazy cat.

Martin Key is an expert gem cutter and jewelry designer based in South Portland, Maine. He has been cutting gems since highschool (class of '81!), and is a five time winner of the prestigious AGTA Spectrum Award. His non-traditional approach to gem cutting and innovative design sensibility has set him apart in the fine jewelry realm.

"I am obsessed with color and have always felt an affinity for colored gems, which have long been overshadowed by Big Daddy Diamond. I am always seeking to present colored gems in relation to each other (be they contrasting, complimentary, gradient, etc.) and usually in a geometric form that enhances the relational aspect of the gems' colors."

Come see gemstone jewelry like you've never seen it before at Martin's booth at METAL! 🔥✨

Story time! How Chuck became a metalsmith:

"For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a metalsmith. The blacksmith exhibit at the Cumberland County Fair was the first time I saw somebody take glowing hot metal and shape it with just tongs and a hammer. I think I asked my mom if I could be a blacksmith when I grew up, and she said something to the effect of “Realistically, no, but your uncle is a goldsmith and that’s pretty similar!” When I was 8, my uncle Kenny gave me a block of carving wax & file. The first piece I made was a silver and moonstone ring that I carved for my mom’s birthday that year.

My sophomore year in high school, I attended Kate Wolf’s intensive wax carving course and learned all kinds of new wax carving techniques that I still use to this day. A few years later, I apprenticed at Goldust & Rouge where I learned how to solder jump rings and size bands. After graduating from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in biomedical engineering, I worked with my brother to open up the Highroller Lobster Company on Exchange Street, where I still work as a catering chef. I was working the line there when I had the idea to make kitchen utensils and food items into jewelry. In 2018 I started carving skillets and knives, and Cooked Jewelry was born! Since then I’ve popped up at local spots like the Thirsty Pig, Bissell Bros. and Marcy’s Diner. I was also featured in the New York Times!"

Come see Chuck's line of hand-carved jewelry this summer at METAL and snag something for the chef or Maine lover in your life!
