Our Story
Since starting our business in 1971, Stan and Judy Gillis have grown The Real Mother Goose from one tiny shop in Vancouver, Washington, to our current Portland, Oregon, location at the Portland International Airport. Part gallery and part retail shop, The Real Mother Goose has one goal: bring the best work by American artists and craftspeople together with friendly, personal service in an attractive and comfortable space.
Over the past 40 years, our commitment to building relationships, with customers and with the artists we represent, has been a central focus. In both 1997 & 1998 NICHE magazine's poll of over 20,000 professional craft artists named The Real Mother Goose the nation's top craft retailer on the basis of its courteous and respectful treatment of artists, its extensive promotion and marketing of American crafts, and the time and energy it invests in supporting the craft community and mentoring emerging artists. Although we've been "retired" from winning the award again, NICHE has honored The Real Mother Goose as a Hall of Fame Retailer for continuing our commitment to the American craft community.
