Today is my 45th Doula-versary. I supported my mom birthing my brother in an unassisted birth when I was 7. Today is now Penny Simkin's death-day. I have known Penny my entire professional doula career for over 20+ years. I spent hours in her home learning to be a doula. She was one of my greatest personal mentors. I called her on numerous occasions. Having though many times, "what would Penny do?" Her grace, compassion and wisdom will pass on through the countless doulas who come after her. I secretly thought of her as the Yoda of birth. May the spiral gift her with all the grace of her legacy. ❤ Penny Simkin Photo by

Calling anyone and everyone in the birth justice space! We want to hear from YOU.
As philanthropic support and impact investing continue to find their way to birth justice, Elephant Circle is engaging with the central questions connected to our movement's vitality and sustainability, making sense of what’s happening in our landscape so we can proactively plan and strategize. As a community-based effort, we need YOUR VOICE to inform this work.
Complete the Birth Justice Survey here: https://forms.gle/95MocCLujPsDyfuA8
Through this survey, we seek to:
•Understand your role in the birth justice movement
•Describe the networks and alliances within the birth justice movement
•Map the services and strategies offered to people in the perinatal period and their sustainability
•Describe the funding needs of the birth justice movement and how funding for various services and strategies may impact it
We are circulating this survey in collaboration with these community partners:

1 Mississippi. 2 Mississippi 3 Mississippi 4 Mississippi 5 Mississippi 6 Mississippi 7 Mississippi 8 Mississippi 9 Mississippi 10 Mississippi. A person can die. Be murdered. Be assaulted. Be violated. Be restrained. Be scared. Be forever changed and hurt in under 10 seconds.
I wrote about what happened and is still happening to Jenni Hermoso in today’s FM Weekly. As a survivor, writer, and activist, I rage at every headline calling it a “kiss” instead of an assault, I scream at every reiteration of r**e culture in the court of public opinion, and I seethe at every single trope of misogyny being leveled against her, what she experienced then and likely for months if not years before, and for her teammates and others not visible in their survivorship but hopefully gaining strength due to her bravery. May these images of her in her power and actively celebrating be those that we lead with.
Excerpt:
He did this in front of her teammates, in front of his colleagues, and specifically in a moment when her strength and professional achievement was at its highest absolute peak. Her win, and her body, were his for the taking…
In July, an Italian judge concluded that sexual assault can not occur if the violation lasted fewer than 10 seconds. Ten. Seconds.
What happened to Hermoso was sexual assault and it lasted a few seconds. What happened to the Italian student was sexual assault and it lasted ten seconds. What happens is sexual assault and it doesn’t matter if it’s a doctor or a teacher or a family member or your coach or your boss or a stranger or if there’s force or paralysis or unconsciousness or coercion or if you yelled or you screamed no or if you felt stuck or if you were alone or if you whispered stop or if five people watched and didn’t step in or if no one ever knows or if everyone knows or if your clothes were on or ripped off or if you initially said yes but then said no because any form of no at any time or any lack of yes in any way is what matters.
I can only hope that how we, we all, internalize or reject the narratives currently underway related to Hermoso’s sexual safety and her bodily integrity might reflect that, for f**k’s sake, enough is enough, that any amount or duration of violation is assault, and our work until now has to somehow continue, surviving in all of this, to limit how many more people will need to say .

Hello my West side doulas. I have a Beaverton afghan refugee student who was scholarshipped for this weekends training starting Thursday. She has no transportation. she has a 9 month and needs to get to Mother Tree Farm for class. No other course mates are coming from that area. She can’t take Max or Uber/Lyft. Anyone willing to be her morning driver for a 7:30 Am pickup. Thursday -Sunday? We can compensate for. “DUber”. 😍. Or other ideas?
