On the eve of July 4th, a little reminder about firework safety! The exploding kind are obviously dangerous; but when I was an EMT, we saw a lot of 3rd degree hand burns on children from sparklers. I recommend putting the handle of the sparkler through a paper plate to create a barrier between the particles and the hand/arm. Holding the sparkler beneath the plate will keep the molten particles from landing on the skin. And wear shoes to protect the tops of the feet from those same particles. Have a great 4th!

This week, we have seen A LOT of low back and pelvis injuries due to slip-n-fall accidents in the ice from the winter storm. We are constantly having to deal with prior authorizations in healthcare that are a hindrance to patients accessing their benefits and physicians caring for the patient appropriately. If you feel that your authorizations for healthcare of any kind have been hindered by negligence on the part of your insurer, taking to social media may be an excellent choice. Sometimes you have to fight back in the streets to get the job done in the office.

This week, we have seen a lot of low back injuries related to gardening in the warm weather last weekend. Simple tip for prevention as the weather warms up: Before you hit the garden, warm up just like you would before you hit the gym. Physical labor can be just as demanding as a solid workout, so prepare your body for it. Simple, motion-based stretches will help prevent a lot of injuries to the low back and shoulders that are associated with gardening activities like shoveling mulch, pulling weeds, and trimming branches. It's going to get sunny again soon (hopefully), so be ready for it!
