Despite that all women go through menopause as they age, there are still very few resources and information about this transition and how it can impact their sleep, energy, mood, and overall health. As a PBS article published in 2023 states, “Menopause is ubiquitous, so why is it often stigmatized and ignored?”

In our upcoming webinar, “Menopause, Postmenopause, and Your Health: How to Best Support your Sleep, Energy, Mood, and More”, Dr. Dave Rabin, MD, PhD, and Dr. Kelly Casperson, MD dive into ways that women can support their health and improve their sleep throughout this pivotal phase in their lives. Whether you’re a female experiencing these hormone changes or have a loved one who is and you want to better support them, this webinar is for everyone who is proactive about their health as they age and is passionate about living their fullest lives in their later years.

Don’t miss the live Q&A session where your pressing questions can be answered.

Tune in to hear the experts cover conversations like:

It turns out the microbiome is likely the most important regulator of our overall health. There are 100 trillion microbes in you, 10 times the number of your own cells, and 100 times your DNA. We have 20,000 genes. Your microbiome contains 2 to 5 million microbial genes, all making proteins, cell-signaling molecules, messengers of health or disease. Some scientists estimate that a third to half of all the molecules in our blood come from microbial metabolites. They interact with our genes, hormones, immune system, brain chemistry, and every single process in our biology. Our gut microbes also provide us with essential vitamins: vitamin K and biotin.⁣

Sadly, our gut microbiome ain’t what it used to be. We eat gut-busting foods, live a gut-busting lifestyle, and take gut-busting drugs. Want to grow toxic w**ds in your gut? Feed them a processed diet high in sugar and starch, food additives, and the microbiome-destroying w**d killer glyphosate, used on 70 percent of all crops. ⁣

The bad bugs drive inflammation, which is at the root of almost all chronic diseases and obesity. Sixty percent of your immune system is in your gut, right under a one-cell- thin layer of gut lining.⁣

The more I practice medicine, the more I realize that the gut is the most important organ system in the body to create foundational health.

In Functional Medicine, we understand that healing the body starts with healing the gut. Just like Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” In fact, our gut and the tons of bacteria that reside within it regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function, and, of course, our metabolism and weight. The health of the community of microbes living in and on our bodies—100 trillion single-cell organisms, outnumbering human cells 10 to 1—has become a top priority.

Meanwhile, modern living and our bad lifestyle choices have been hard on those bugs. The standard Western diet is impoverished of the things our beneficial gut bacteria require. All the chemicals from processed foods and the environmental toxins we take in only make the situation worse. Our guts become damaged when we eat a processed diet that’s high in sugar and starch, don’t eat enough of the right fiber and prebiotics, take too many gut-busting drugs, or when we are exposed to a series of insults and trauma like I was.

Think of your gut as an inner garden. And just as with any garden, when you let the w**ds take over, you get into trouble.

Unfortunately, loads of us struggle with the w**ds taking over. At least 20 million Americans suffer from digestive distress, and on top of that many don’t realize that everything from acne to mood disorders, autoimmune disease, thyroid imbalances, memory challenges, and most chronic disease can be traced back to an imbalanced microbiome.

So the question becomes, how do we fix our guts?

My healing took me on a deep dive through all of the ingredients required to make a healthy microbiome and a healthy human. In addition to stress management, gentle movement, targeted therapies, and nourishing foods, I had to provide my microbiome with what it needed to thrive.

Once I got rid of the bad stuff, I built up my good bacteria with three specific categories of nutrients: probiotics, prebiotics, and polyphenols.

We are complex creatures living in a complex environment. So why does modern society try to tell us that our best medicine can simply come in the form of a magic pill? Our health is about so much more than prescriptions. It's so much more complex; it's as complicated as the world we live in. Which is why we have to be mindful of what we feed ourselves because everything you take in is medicine. We wonder why we feel stressed when we live in a world where we consume 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week news meant to provoke and unsettle us and have diets consisting of over-processed, sugary-foods. You have to be careful what you feed because what you choose to take in, that's your path, that's your medicine road. How will you choose to walk it?

From Katie Evans:
HOW TO FIGHT COVID AT HOME
No one ever talks about how to fight Covid at home. I came down with Covid in November. I went to the hospital, running a fever of 103, a rapid heart beat, and other common symptoms that come with Covid. While I was there they treated me for the high fever, dehydration and pneumonia.
The doctor sent me home to fight Covid with two prescriptions - Azithromycin 250mg & Dexamethason 6mg. When the nurse came in to discharge me, I asked her, "What can I do to help fight this at home?" She said, “Sleep on your stomach at all times with Covid. If you can’t sleep on your stomach because of heath issues sleep on your side. Do not lay on your back no matter what because it smashes your lungs and that will allow fluid to set in.
Set your clock every two hours while sleeping on your stomach, then get out of bed and walk for 15-30 min, no matter how tired or weak that you are. Also move your arms around frequently, it helps to open your lungs. Breathe in thru your nose, and out thru your mouth. This will help build up your lungs, plus help get rid of the Pneumonia or other fluid you may have.
When sitting in a recliner, sit up straight - do not lay back in the recliner, again this will smash your lungs. While watching TV - get up and walk during every commercial.
Eat at least 1 - 2 eggs a day, plus bananas, avocado and asparagus. These are good for Potassium. Drink Pedialyte, Gatorade Zero, Powerade Zero & Water with Electrolytes to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. Do not drink anything cold - have it at room temperature or warm it up. Water with lemon, and little honey, peppermint tea, apple cider are good suggestions for getting in fluids. No milk products, or pork. Vitamin’s D3, C, B, Zinc, Probiotic One-Day are good ideas. Tylenol for fever. Mucinex, or Mucinex DM for drainage, plus helps the cough. Pepcid helps for cramps in your legs. One baby aspirin everyday can help prevent getting a blood clot, which can occur from low activity. "
Drink a smoothie of blueberries, strawberries, bananas, honey, tea and a spoon or two of peanut butter.
We always hear of how Covid takes lives, but there isn't a lot of information out there regarding how to fight Covid. I hope this helps you or someone you know, just as it has helped me.

I talk a lot about the way adaptogens can support the body's response to stress, and it turns out they may also help prevent and treat viral infections — and aid in recovery from them. Conducting a review to demonstrate the potential of adaptogens for the prevention and treatment of viral respiratory infections and convalescence, researchers looked at data from hundreds of studies. They found that "adaptogens can play a potentially important role at all stages of viral infection." The ability of adaptogens to affect the neuroendocrine-immune system may be responsible for its ability to prevent and decrease the duration of viral illness. Read more here: https://bit.ly/37w38fS

We all know the dreaded feeling when we sense ourselves coming down with something. While there’s nothing that can replace good sleep hygiene and a balanced diet to help your body maintain a healthy immune system, herbs can help give it a boost. A large clinical study in 2015 showed that a combination of echinacea and elderberry is as effective as the conventional antiviral medicine Tamiflu in the early treatment of influenza. At the end of the study, it was shown that the two treatments were nearly statistically identical, with a trend towards a higher recovery in patients receiving the herbal remedy. Early treatment is vital with any cold or flu treatment, so remember that Mother Nature has provided so many beautiful gifts to help keep your body supported all season long.
