Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a taper (also known as a taper fade, or a skin taper) and a skin fade (also known as a fade, or a bald fade)? Here is some info that will help make explaining your next haircut less anxiety-producing for you, and more clear for your barber! 💈

Skin Fade:
**High: Starts near the temples or crown for a bold look.
**Medium: Begins mid-head for a balanced style.
**Low: Starts just above the ears for a subtle fade.

Taper:
**Placement: Focuses on the sideburns and nape.
**Effect: Gradually shortens hair around the edges for a natural look.

Key Differences:
**Skin Fades: Dramatic changes across a larger area.
**Tapers: Subtle reductions around the edges.

And remember, asking for a “bald” skin fade or taper means that you want the shortest length to be true skin (meaning zero stubble, think razorblade closeness). Asking for a skin fade alone often implies leaving some stubble at the shortest length. I know it sounds confusing, but making sure to clarify these things with your barber or hairstylist is the key to getting the exact cut you want!

One of my favorite colors I’ve done to-date. This was a combination of highlights and lowlights, a deep root melt, bold face-framing lites, and styled with big-bodied waves. This entire process took me around 4.5 hrs. I still can’t get over how good this looked on her. ❤️
