*Status of current Canine Respiratory Illness *
There is ongoing research to determine the cause. Veterinarians are receiving updates as information develops.
The difficult part is we don’t know what we are dealing with. The best advice is to keep dog social contact to a minimum during this time and make sure your dog is current on vaccines.
What we do know is the illness tends to fall into 3 categories:
- Chronic mild to moderate inflammation of the trachea lasting six to eight weeks or longer, which is minimally or not responsive to antimicrobials.
- Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antimicrobials.
- Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24 to 36 hours.
If your dog is exhibiting respiratory symptoms please contact your veterinarian.
FAQ:
Is it spreading in our area?
We could cannot confirm if it is spreading as there are no confirmatory tests available at this time.
What are first symptoms? (any specific symptoms - nasal discharge, cough, raspy breathing?)
Symptoms vary based on the individual assessment. Any respiratory symptoms should be addressed with your veterinarian.

🚨Heat stroke, sometimes called heat exhaustion or heat-induced hyperthermia can occur easily and rapidly in dogs or cats.

☀️Heat stroke typically occurs during warmer summer months but can occur any time of the year, especially here in Arizona.

⚠️Heat stroke can affect any body system and quickly become life-threatening.
Any dog or cat body temperature over 105.0F is an emergency.

✅What can you do if you think your pet has suffered heat stroke:
Remove them from the hot environment
Place them in a cool or shaded area
Obtain a re**al temperature (if possible)
Begin the cooling process
Cool, wet towels on various body regions (inner thighs, armpits, stomach, back of neck).
Cool water on the paw pads and ear flaps.
Placing them in front or under a fan.
Call and transport to your nearest veterinary ER.
Offer fresh, cool tap water for drinking (do not force it into their mouths).

🛑What NOT to do:
Do not use alcohol on any part. This can cool them too rapidly.
Do not place your pet in an ice water bath.
Ice is not warranted, cool water alone is sufficient.
Do not shave long-haired dogs, but carefully trimming the hair may be beneficial.

⚠️Common conditions leading to heat stroke:
Any pet left in a vehicle
Hot and humid weather
Inadequate ventilation, shade or water sources
Strenuous play, exercising, hiking, etc during the heat of the day

🌡Dog’s and cat’s normal body temperature is much higher than ours (100.0F - 102.5F) and thus can easily rise to unsafe levels.
Dogs and cats do not sweat easily
They pant in order to cool themselves

❗️ANY breed is susceptible to heat stroke but some are more at risk than others; for example Brachycephalic breeds (flat faced dogs):
Bulldogs (French, English and American)
Boston Terriers
Boxers
Pugs
Lhasa Apso
Shih Tzu
Pekingese
Brussels Griffon
Mastiffs
Cavalier King Charles
Any crosses with the above listed breeds.

🔥Conditions making heat stroke a higher possibility:
Laryngeal Paralysis (Lar Par)
Obesity
Heart Disease and/or hypertension (high blood pressure)
Geriatric animals
Conditions that affect mobility
Darker or thick-coated animals
Symptoms of heat stroke include but are not limited to:
Distress
Excessive panting and restlessness
Large amounts of drool from the mouth or nose
Incoordination or being unsteady on their feet
The tongue or gums turning purple/blue or bright/brick red
Collapse

It’s foxtail season again, thanks to our wet winter months, this year they are in full force. This pesky w**d produces a barbed seed head that can work its way into any part of your dog or cat. Common places we find foxtail seeds are in the ears, nose, eyes, mouth, and the skin between their toes. These seeds are very good at digging their way through the skin. Signs related to an embedded foxtail include: licking, scratching, head shaking, or a swollen and red eye/paw, etc. If your pet has these signs and you are concerned about a foxtail you can get them evaluated at Urgent Pet Prescott, they are open 7 days a week! Patients are seen on a walk-in basis from 10a to 7p. If your pet is in discomfort outside of the Urgent Pet Prescott hours we can see your pet here at Yavapai Emergency Animal Hospital.

Happy National Puppy Day! 🐶
It also happens to be National Poison Prevention Week! ☠️
Put the two together, and we have an excellent opportunity to share prevention opportunities to keep your pup safe.
Common Puppy Toxic Exposures include (but are not limited to):
1. Xylitol 🍬- a favorite no calorie artificial sweetener that is a delicious and deadly treat (to our pets), found in many foods, including gum, peanut butter, and desserts.
2. Batteries 🔋- when dropped on the floor, make for an interesting (and hazardous) toy/treat.
3. Medications 💊 - those pill vials are fun-filled toys; keep them in a secured cabinet.
If you suspect your pet has consumed or been exposed to a toxic item, please get in touch with Pet Poison Helpline immediately. A trained toxicology team member will be able to help you right away.
