Mountain Institute starts Yavapai County high school students on the path to a variety of careers.
Heather Andrews is our Veterinary Assisting Program Instructor. The 2023/24 school year was her first with Mountain Institute and she is looking forward to building on her success with a new group of students in the coming year. In an area like Yavapai County, with so many animal lovers, it is no surprise that there is a lot of student interest in Veterinary Assisting.
Heather has many fond childhood memories of her mother fostering animals of all kinds. It was not uncommon in her childhood home to find ducks in the sink or baby birds in the butter tub. These experiences were influential in Heather's decision to pursue Veterinary medicine back in 1974, straight from a vocational program like the one she teaches today! She feels that if she had not had that opportunity high school, she would not be where she is today. Having 50 years of experience under her belt, she is extremely enthusiastic about what she does, and she loves to see that same enthusiasm come out in her students.
In her words: “I believe CTE is so important because it [can be] a stepping stone into a field that you might not have ever been able to step into because of a lack of introduction”. She is living proof of the fact that it works! From the classroom to the front!

Clayton's favorite part of the Auto Repair Program was getting to work on engine assembly because he enjoys the small, minute details that go into building and maintaining an engine.
He wants to make sure that future students take their classes and opportunities at Mountain Institute seriously.
Clayton stressed that these are great opportunities that High School students can take advantage of for free, and if they make the most of them, could lead to an amazing career as well!

Sienna is an aspiring Nurse Practitioner who is currently taking our Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program over the summer after recently graduating from Tri City Prep High School. Taking CNA over the summer is a highly accelerated program, with a semester's worth of learning and clinicals covered in just over 3 weeks! Sienna has been attending class for 8.5-9 hours a day on top of having a part time job. She says going from being able to sleep in and just enjoy the summer, to such a demanding schedule has (understandably!) been a challenge for her. She decided to enroll in the CNA Program as a first step on her path to a Nursing degree, and to gain some experience in the medical field. She plans on working a year or two as a CNA before starting Nursing School at the University of Arizona.
When we asked Sienna what keeps her motivated, she shared this story from one of her favorite shows:
“It’s kind of silly but I’ve been obsessed with the show “Grey’s Anatomy” for a long time. When I’m feeling discouraged, tired, or frustrated, I think about one of the Doctors from the show… He starts out every surgery by saying “It’s a beautiful day to save lives!” For some reason that always helps me to keep going because even though I don’t plan on becoming a surgeon… I do hope at some point in my life, I help save a life and make the world a better place! This helps me refocus on my goals and remember what healthcare is really about!”
Way to go Sienna! We believe you will indeed save lives and are already making the world a better place!
