When Tony Award nominee Jane Cox, Director of Program in Theater & Music Theater, walks into Sundays’ ceremony she’ll be wearing an original dress by LCA’s own Caitlin Brown, assistant costume shop manager. Cox has been nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design of a Play for Appropriate Play.

Congratulations to Theater Program Director Jane Cox and Princeton University alum Branden Jacobs-Jenkins ’06 for their Drama Desk Awards wins for “Appropriate”! Cox won the award for Outstanding Lighting Design of a Play and the show won the award for Outstanding Revival of a Play, which was written by Jacobs-Jenkins.

The Commons presents ⍰ ⍰ ⍰ was an exhibition of new work by Luke Shannon ’24 and Petr Karpov ’24. In this exhibition— a construction of arenas, scanners, and a series of performances—visitors alternated between spectator, player, plotter, artist, and artwork, and were invited to create additional roles of their liking. The exhibition was on view in the Princeton University's Lucas Gallery from March 25-April 5.

As a recipient of a 2023 Alex Adam ’07 Award, Tanaka Dunbar Ngwara ’24 spent last summer conducting musical, historical, and performance-based research in London, Edinburgh, and Zimbabwe. Tanka used that research to create an original musical Paivapo '76, a story inspired in part by her ancestral history in Domboshava, Zimbabwe, and by the conflict between religion and traditional spirituality during Zimbabwe’s Liberation War.
Paivapo ’76 (roughly translated “once upon a time”) was Tanaka's senior thesis for her Department of Music at Princeton University major and her certificate in the Program in Theater & Music Theater. The work premiered May 3-5 in the Wallace Theater.
In 2024, the Lewis Center for the Arts awarded more than $177,000 for summer projects in the arts to 55 Princeton University students.

As a recipient of the 2023 Alex Adam ’07 Award, Storm Stokes ’24 spent last summer pursuing movement research in L.A. and at international dance festivals in Italy, Germany, and Austria. Stokes incorporated her learning to create “i, heresy,” a new multi-media dance work she choreographed and directed with her cast of dancers and visual artist Julia Stahlman ’24. “i, heresy,” premiered February 29, in the Hearst Dance Theater.

Kapili Naehu-Ramos ’24, who is majoring in the Practice of Art Track, discusses “Moʻo” which was on view in the Hurley Gallery from April 15-26. Kapili’s exhibition featured richly symbolic textile works created in reverence of the feminine. In native Hawaiian, Moʻo means fragment of a whole, stories or histories, genealogy, perpetuation, or lizard, among others.

"Reproduction Production" was an exhibition by Princeton University senior Magnolia Wilkinson featuring a kaleidoscopic collection of mixed media pieces that grappled with childhood memories, contemplations on nostalgia, and explorations of identity, gender, and the act of making. The exhibition was on view in Hurley Gallery April 1-12, 2024.

Congratulations Rebecca Lazier, Professor of the Practice and Acting Director of the Program in Dance, for receiving a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship in the field of Choreography. Current Hodder Fellow and performance artist Modesto “Flako” Jimenez, 2018-19 Hodder Fellow and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok, and 2017-18 Hearst Choreographer-in-Residence Abby Zbikowski are also recipients this year.

Sisyphus, a new play opening April 4-6 and written and directed by Princeton University senior Jessica Lopez, asks: Why do people need to die? Over two thousand years ago, Aeschylus grappled with this question in his two-part telling of the tragedy of Sisyphus. Unfortunately, those plays were all but entirely lost to time, leaving us to come up with our own answers. In this re-imagination of the classic myth, one man struggles against the inevitability of death. Sisyphus promised to make a difference in the world and is ready to throw hands with the gods to keep his word.

All artists are creating new works for students or guest teaching in spring classes.

This mission is based on the conviction that exposure to the arts, particularly to the experience of producing art, helps each of us to make sense of our lives and the lives of our neighbors.
The Lewis Center brings together Princeton’s academic programs in Creative Writing, Dance, Music Theater, Theater, Visual Arts and the Princeton Atelier, and connects them to partners like the Department of Music and the Princeton University Art Museum. In collaboration with Princeton’s Council of the Humanities and other academic departments and centers, the Lewis Center has enhanced the University’s research initiatives in the arts, while fellowships support the work of established and emerging artists and bring new voices to enliven campus with their creativity.
Today, the Lewis Center encompasses multiple venues on the Princeton Campus, including 185 Nassau Street (Program in Visual Arts), New South Building (Program in Creative Writing), and the Lewis Arts complex (Programs in Dance, Theater, and Music Theater, as well as the Princeton Atelier).
