Many of us are enjoying cooler daytime temperatures, but are you prepared for the cold?

Changing leaves means changing temperatures, so please come prepared for any weather. The wide elevation range in the Smokies means wherever you end up in the park may be much colder than where you started your day.

Remember, always bring layers and a waterproof jacket—even on sunny days!

Letter: America asleep instead of on guard
Oct 21, 2023

Under the leadership of former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan compromise spending bill at the end of September, on a vote of 335 to 91. Its passage averted an otherwise imminent shutdown of the government. The bill was overwhelmingly supported by both Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives. This could have been interpreted by some as a welcome sign that Washington was ready to return to bipartisan governance. Instead, what followed was a return to the blatant politics from some on both sides of the political aisle.

At the urging of Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, eight Republican members of the House were joined by every Democrat member to oust McCarthy from his leadership role, although all but one of the Democrat legislators had voted for the McCarthy proposed spending bill. McCarthy did what was necessary to keep government open, but members of the House quickly returned to a strategy of politics above country. The result is a leaderless and dysfunctional House of Representatives.

It is a gross understatement to say the world is in chaos at a time when America needs leadership to engage in the world, and more important to protect our homeland. With America asleep instead of on guard, terrorist organizations like Hamas, and leaders of rogue nations like Iran, North Korea and Russia, feel emboldened to expand their mischievous goals. Bad actors from rogue nations can easily slip through our relatively unguarded southern border and spread mayhem in America. Unless we forget, it is not that long ago that terrorists were able to get into our country and commandeer the cockpits of commercial aircraft, and spread terror to America. That was on 9/11/2001.

In a campaign speech 165 years ago, Abraham Lincoln warned that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” While Lincoln’s famous words related to the issue of slavery, they could aptly be applied to the chaos in both our federal and state governments. The chaos is more driven by the quest for political power than by doing what is good for America. The spectacle of a House of Representatives ousting its leader for the first time in our history is unsettling. What is more unsettling is that we the voters are the ones who are sending power hungry egotistical political hacks to our federal and state governments, and appear ready and willing to repeat the mistake.

Given the threat the world now faces, it would seem like an appropriate time for our federal government to expand America’s defense capability, instead of spending billions trying to control the weather. I, for one, am a lot more fearful of the harm that can come to America through open borders than I am of what weather might do, but I have never claimed to be a weather scientist.
