Our amazing YHDP Systems Lead spoke at the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) conference this week! 💪 Her panel had over 125 attendees and became standing room only! She also visited Senator Reed’s office to champion for expansion of TH-RRH projects and affordable housing units for our youth alongside some great local folks - Shout out to our state captain Sam Burnett, formerly of RICEH, for organizing the Capitol Hill Day advocacy opportunity! & a BIG thank you to NAEH for sponsoring Taty's trip and giving her this opportunity to share Rhode Island’s efforts to eradicate youth homelessness by 2030!
The results of the 2024 Point-in-Time Count show that the number of people experiencing homelessness increased by 35% since last year. The need for advocacy, systems improvements, and affordable housing is more pressing than ever... Our unhoused neighbors need us. Visit the link in our bio for the full 2024 PIT data.
Along with Homeless Advocates from across the country, we are disappointed to learn of the SCOTUS decision today on Grants Pass verus Oregon. Luckily, the protections that were sought in the SCOTUS case are FULLY IN EFFECT here in Rhode Island. In 2011, The Coalition championed the Homeless Bill of Rights that provides protections for people sleeping outside from criminalization. We are pleased that RI has the HBOR but there is still much more work to be done here in Rhode Island and across the United States to protect our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

A shoutout of heartfelt gratitude to Speaker Shekarchi and the House Finance Committee for their decision to increase funding for the Homeless Assistance Fund and for increasing the General Obligation Housing Bond to $120,000,000. This vital investment signifies a significant step towards increasing affordable housing options, ensuring stability and security for many in our community.
Here is a position statement by the American Public Health Association on how we can protect the health & well-being of people living unsheltered by stopping forcible displacement of encampments https://buff.ly/3WOyutr
"It is important for us to be open and transparent about this fact: forced displacement of people from encampments does nothing to end homelessness...Far from helpful, encampment sweeps cost money, waste valuable time and resources, and are ultimately counterproductive." TY Dr. Karb for your The Providence Journal op-ed on encampment raids
Razing encampments satisfies the public, hurts the homeless | Opinion Submitted opinion column: Rebecca Karb, MD, is an emergency and Street Medicine physician.

"A death certificate would say he died of sepsis from a bone infection, but my friend and I have a term for the illness that killed him: end-stage poverty." Read this op-ed which highlights why we as a society are failing ppl experiencing homelessness and why we need to invest in housing, addiction treatment, free and low-barrier health care, and social services
Opinion | Many Patients Don’t Survive End-Stage Poverty If health care is interpreted in the truest sense of caring for people’s health, it must extend well beyond the boundaries of hospitals and clinics.
